Note | An illustrated Life of Christ presented to the Chinese emperor : the history of Jincheng shuxiang (1640) / Nicolas Standaert. "A renewed attention to visual culture is one of the recent developments in the study of cultural contacts between China and Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The subject of this book is the illustrated Life of Christ presented to the Chinese emperor in 1640 by the Jesuit missionary Johann Adam Schall von Bell S.J. (1592–1666). The origin of the work is a small parchment booklet with coloured miniature paintings based on a wide variety of prints by well-known European engravers (e.g., H. Goltzius, J. Stradanus). It was compiled in Munich in 1617 and a Chinese version with the title Jincheng shuxiang was published in Beijing more than twenty years later in a nicely illustrated edition. This book is composed of two parts. Part I traces the complex history of production of Jincheng shuxiang, from its European origin to its Chinese reception. It also analyses the illustrations and the text. Part II contains the reproduction of the Chinese text and 48 illustrations, the reproduction of the identified original European prints and a translation of the Chinese text. It is hoped that the wider diffusion of this rare primary source, which is now reprinted for the first time since the seventeenth century, will further stimulate the study of visual culture in Sino-Western relations. The book will be of interest to a broad range of scholars, from art historians of China and Europe to scholars interested in print history, and theologians."--Publisher. |

Note | Chinese voices in the rites controversy : travelling books, community networks, intercultural arguments / Nicolas Standaert. "The Chinese rites controversy in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries is often considered a purely European affair: the Catholic Church questioned whether Chinese rites such as ancestor worship could be practised by Chinese converts. But to what extent did Chinese scholars take part in the debates concerning these rites? An exceptional series of Chinese and European sources preserved in the Roman Archives of the Society of Jesus (ARSI), dating from the year 1701 to 1704, provide new evidence for the Chinese voices in this controversy. These sources include a collection of some 60 Chinese letters (with about 430 different signatories) that were sent to Rome to make their voices heard. These letters provide a unique insight not only into the argumentation but also into the sociological composition of the local Christian communities and their networks at the beginning of the eighteenth century. "Confession in early modern Europe has been the subject of several studies. But what happened to the confessional practice when it moved to other cultures? This is the major research question of the present book as applied to late Ming and early Qing China. The origin of this research can be traced back to the Handbook of Christianity in China: Volume One (635-1800) (Leiden 2000) compiled by researchers of the K.U. Leuven, in collaboration with an international team of circa twenty scholars. As a reference work, the Handbook comprehensively presents many different aspects of Christianity in China, including sciences, arts and crafts. But there was one major absentee: ritual, which is often considered essential for understanding China. A first step in filling the gap was the organisation of an international workshop on 'Chinese and Christian Rituality in Late Imperial China' (Leuven, June 2004). The present volume includes the revised contributions by Eugenio Menegon and Erik Zürcher and a reworked version of an article by Liam Brockey as well as the edition of the primary source he used for his article, a confessional manual composed by José Monteiro S.J. (1646-1720). These articles portray from different angles one of the sacramental rituals, viz. that of confession"--Introd. |

Note | The interweaving of rituals : funerals in the cultural exchange between China and Europe / Nicolas Standaert. "The death of the Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci in China in 1610 was the occasion for demonstrations of European rituals appropriate for a Catholic priest and also of Chinese rituals appropriate to the country hosting the Jesuit community. Rather than burying Ricci immediately in a plain coffin near the church, according to their European practice, the Jesuits followed Chinese custom and kept Ricci's body for nearly a year in an air-tight Chinese-style coffin and asked the emperor for burial ground outside the city walls. Moreover, at Ricci's funeral itself, on their own initiative the Chinese performed their funerary rituals, thus starting a long and complex cultural dialogue in which they took the lead during the next century. |

See also accompanying treatise in the same number: Biblical Chronology and the Transmission of the Theory of Six "World Ages" to China: "Gezhi aolüe" 格致奧略 (Outline of the mystery [revealed through] natural science ; before 1723) by Ad Dudink. Local access dig.pdf. [Standaert-Chinese chronology.pdf] Abstract: When Jesuit missionaries went to China in the seventeenth century, they discovered that Chinese history was in many regards apparently longer than the history as presented by the Bible. Subsequently, they started to translate Chinese histories, which they sent back to Europe, and which in the eighteenth century were adopted by Enlightenment thinkers for their own purposes. The European side of this story is quite well known, but what about the Chinese side? What sources did the Jesuits use and how did these sources interpret ancient history? As part of a larger project, these questions about the Chinese sources are answered from an intercultural perspective. The missionaries not only used classical Chinese histories written during the Song dynasty (960-1279), but also numerous newly edited or newly composed works from the seventeenth century. While they themselves originated from a Europe in which the ars historica was in full transition, they met a situation in China where new approaches to history had emerged. They used comprehensive histories, such as the one by the late Ming scholar Nan Xuan 南軒, or the more wide-spread genres, such as gangjian 綱鑑 (outline and mirror) histories, which from the late eighteenth century fell into oblivion. In fact, the sources used by the Jesuits not only throw light on their own compilations that were ultimately sent to Europe, but also on the writing of history in China in the late Ming (1368-1644) and the early Qing dynasties (1644-1911). |

Note | Liyi zhi zheng zhong de Zhongguo shengyin 禮儀之爭中的中國聲音 = Chinese voices in the rites controversy / [Bi] Zhong Mingdan zhu ; Chen Yanrong yi. [比]鐘鳴旦著 ; 陳妍蓉譯. Translation of: Chinese voices in the rites controversy: travelling books, community networks, intercultural arguments. Includes facsimile reproductions of a selection of Chinese and Latin documents written between 1701 and 1704 held by the Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu. Documents from ARSI Jap-Sin 137, 157, 160, 165, 167, and I, 206. This book investigates how knowledge about Chinese rites was produced, distributed, and exchanged at that time. It fully exploits the richness of these documents with regard to three themes: travelling books, community networks and intercultural arguments. The book includes a reproduction of all the Chinese primary sources."--Publisher note from English edition. |

Note | The Chinese gazette in European sources : joining the global public in the early and mid-Qing dynasty / by Nicolas Standaert. Includes bibliographical references and index. Introduction -- The Kangxi Period (1662-1722) -- The Yongzheng Period (1723-1735) -- The Qianlong Period (1736-1795) -- General Conclusion. "The Chinese gazette as a publicly available government publication was distributed in a variety of formats since the twelfth century. Little is known, however, about its form and content before 1800. By looking at China from the periphery, this study shows how European sources offer a unique way of expanding the knowledge about the gazette of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Its interconnected history illustrates how the Chinese gazette, as translated by European missionaries, became a major source for reflections on state and society by Enlightenment thinkers. It thus joined a global public much earlier than so far assumed"-- Provided by publisher. Note: Jingbao; also called dibao 邸報 , dichao 邸抄. Note | The intercultural weaving of historical texts : Chinese and European stories about Emperor Ku and his concubines / by Nicolas Standaert. "The European view on history was shaken to its foundations when missionaries in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries discovered that Chinese history was older than European and Biblical history. With an analysis of the Chinese, Manchu and European sources on ancient Chinese history, this essay proposes an early case of “intercultural historiography,” in which historical texts of different cultures are interwoven. Reprint. Preface also in English. "The present collection in 34 volumes reproduces 84 titles ...." -- Preface. Table of contents online in pdf at: Chugoku Shoten. "Sequel to the Chinese Christian Texts from the Zikawei Library is edited by Nicolas Standaert, Ad Dudink and Wang Renfang. In line with earlier collections, it reproduces not yet known or not yet published texts which were originally co-produced by Chinese and Europeans. These prints and manuscripts revive the early contacts between China and Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth century. The present collection of 34 volumes includes 84 titles from the Zikawei (Xujiahui) Library in Shanghai. Two of these titles cover already 14 volumes: Zhang Xingyao’s 張星曜 Tianjiao mingbian 天教明辨 and Louis de Poirot’s translation of the Old (incomplete) and New Testament. The remaining 82 titles cover a wide range of subjects such as Bible texts, Christian explanations of the Book of Changes, apologetics, history of religion and science, and include unique or rather rare titles, for example Jingyi tang zhi 敬一堂誌, Renlei yuanliu 人類源流, Chongxiu jingyun 崇修精蘊, Lü Liben 呂立本 Yijing benzhi 易經本旨, Shang Huqing 尚祜卿 Bu Ru wengao 補儒文告, Lu Xiyan 陸希言 Yishuo 億說, and Chen Xun 陳薰 Xingxue xingmi 性學醒迷. The purpose of this publication of precious works is twofold: to protect the ancient documents against damage and decay as well as to make these unique documents open to researchers in order to encourage new research. In this way, the editors hope to contribute to the protection and conservation of this cultural heritage."--Publishers note.

Note | Yesuhui Luoma dang'anguan Ming-Qing Tianzhujiao wenxian 耶穌會羅馬檔案館明清天主教文獻 / edited by Nicolas Standaert [鐘鳴旦] [and] Adrian Dudink [杜鼎克]. Introduction The present publication reproduces some 100 texts from these four collections. In selecting these texts the editors adopted the following criteria...texts written before ca. 1820...texts not reprinted in any modern collection....unique or rare texts. They include catechetical texts by missionaries, Christian texts by converts, and rules for sodalities. Vols. 9-11 reproduce Jap.Sin. I (38/42), 39-42 (except 40/1), a unique set of some thirty manuscript documents written by Chinese converts concerning aspects of the Chinese Rites during the last two decades of the 17th century. Other texts are not unique but often difficult to access, as in Kouduo richao (vol. 7) ... The first three volumes cover mainly catechetical writings and some texts that introduce methods of prayer amd meditation. They include some of the earliest introductions of the Christian doctrine, such as Michele Ruggieri's original version (1584) of Tianzhu shilu (no.1), Alfonso Vagnone's explanation of Doctrina Christiana or Tianzhu jiaoyao (1615)(no.3), or the illustrated guide to the prayer of the Rosary by Joao da Rocha (Song nianzhu guicheng)(no.6). Vols. 3-4 contain two important writings by Giulio Aleni on the Life of Christ (nos.14, 15). Vol. 5 is organized around a broad category of Christian ritual, including a perpetual liturgical calendar by Philippe Couplet (no. 19) and explanations of the funeral ritual by different authors. Philosophy and science in the renaissance sense of the word are included in the 6th vol.; introductions to Aristotelian psychology (no. 26), the art of drawing (no.27), or the study of sleep and dreams (nos. 28, 29). Vol. 7 is entirely covered by Kouduo richao, an extensive selected record of the missionaries' preaching in Fujian during a period of ten years (1630-1640). Vols. 8-11 are texts by Chinese Christians. Vol. 8-9 include various writings by them on explicitly Christian religious themes. The role of Chinese converts in the Chinese Rites controversy having so far been largely underestimated, vol. 10-11 present texts in which they express themselves on this topic. These may challenge the vision of the controversy as being by and large a European problem. Appended to vol. 11 is Buglio's translation of parts of the Rituale Romanum. The 12th and final volume contains texts on various topics such as natural philosophy, medicine, the life of the saints, biographies of famous missionaries in China, and the rules of sodalities."--Preface.
