Western missionaries in China often considered themselves "voluntary exiles" in a distant land, while Chinese considered Christians either the demons of imperialism or the angels of modernization. This collection of new research provides insights into attempts to bridge the social and religious divide that separated China and the West, and serves as an artful and captivating history of how missionaries and native Christians confronted the sometimes violent antagonisms caused by cultural and linguistic difference.

Christianity is often praised as an agent of Chinese modernization or damned as a form of cultural and religious imperialism. In both cases, Christianity’s foreignness and the social isolation of converts have dominated this debate. Eugenio Menegon uncovers another story. In the sixteenth century, European missionaries brought a foreign and global religion to China. Converts then transformed this new religion into a local one over the course of the next three centuries.

Focusing on the still-active Catholic communities of Fuan county in northeast Fujian, this project addresses three main questions. Why did people convert? How did converts and missionaries transform a global and foreign religion into a local religion? What does Christianity’s localization in Fuan tell us about the relationship between late imperial Chinese society and religion?

Based on an impressive array of sources from Asia and Europe, this pathbreaking book reframes our understanding of Christian missions in Chinese-Western relations. The study’s implications extend beyond the issue of Christianity in China to the wider fields of religious and social history and the early modern history of global intercultural relations. The book suggests that Christianity became part of a preexisting pluralistic, local religious space, and argues that we have so far underestimated late imperial society’s tolerance for “heterodoxy.” The view from Fuan offers an original account of how a locality created its own religious culture in Ming-Qing China within a context both global and local, and illuminates the historical dynamics contributing to the remarkable growth of Christian communities in present-day China.

China's Christianity : from missionary to indigenous church / edited by Anthony E. Clark.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

"Among the assumptions interrogated in this volume ... is if Christianity should most accurately be identified as 'Chinese' when it displays vestiges of Chinese cultural aesthetics, or whether Chinese Christianity is more indigenous when it is allowed to form its own theological framework. In other words, can theological uniqueness also function as a legitimate Chinese Christian cultural expression in the formation of its own ecclesial identity? Also central to what is explored in this book is how missionary influences, consciously or unconsciously, introduced seeds of independence into the cultural ethos of China's Christian community. Chinese girls who pushed 'the limits of proper behaviour,' for example, added to the larger sense of confidence as China's Christians began to resist the model of Christianity they had inherited from foreign missionaries."-- Back cover.

China's saints : Catholic martyrdom during the Qing (1644-1911) / Anthony E. Clark.
Includes bibliographical references and index.

"While previous works on the history of Christianity in China have largely centered on the scientific and philosophical areas of Catholic missions in the Middle Kingdom, China's Saints recounts the history of Christian martyrdom, precipitated as it was by cultural antagonisms and misunderstanding. Anthony Clark shows that Christianity in China began and grew under similar circumstances to those during the Roman Empire, with the notable exception that Catholic missionaries were not successful at producing a "Chinese Constantine." One of the principal results of Catholic martyrdom in China was the increased indigenization of Christianity. During the reconstruction of mission churches, hospitals, and orphanages after the hostilities of the Boxer Uprising (1898-1900), the Roman Catholic tradition of venerating martyrs was attached to the reinvigoration of Christian communities. Not only did Catholic architecture accommodate to Chinese sensibilities, but causes for sainthood were also begun at the Vatican to add Chinese names to the Church's list of saints. The implications of Clark's work extend beyond the subject of Christianity in China to the broader fields of cultural, social, economic, political, and religious history. This pioneering study followsthe trails of Western missionaries and Chinese converts as they negotiate the religious and cultural chasms that existed between the West and China, and it demonstrates that these differences resulted in two very different outcomes. Whereas converts appear to have bridged the cultural divide, often to the point of self-sacrifice, political and cultural tensions on the macro level sometimes ended with forceful conflicts. This book contributes to a deeper understanding of cultural and religious interaction, and provides an account of an heretofore unstudied chapter in the history of Christianity on the global landscape."--Book details.

The food of beasts: martyrdom and death in perspective -- Catholic Christianity in China: Nestorian inroads, Franciscan successes, Jesuit accommodations, and the modern chaos -- The Dominican martyrs of Fujian -- The Jesuit martyrs of Hebei -- The Franciscan martyrs of Hunan and Shanxi -- Other martyrs from other missions -- Conclusion: conflict to accommodation: resettling in the aftermath -- Appendix: beatification and canonization dates of China's saints.

"Christianity first came to China by way of the Silk Road in the seventh century, and, ever since, this great and enduring civilization in the heart of Asia has been home to brothers and sisters of Christ.
Christians in China: A.D. 600 to 2000 chronicles the lives of the Chinese faithful who through the centuries have been both accepted and rejected by their own countrymen. It explores the unique religious and political situations in which Chinese Christians, Catholic and Protestant, have struggled to live their faith and give witness to Christ.
This major work covers each of the historic periods in China with a focus on the development of Christianity and its cultural interaction in each period. It shows the evolution of Christianity as it occurred within the People’s Republic of China. While telling the stories of various Christians throughout Chinese history, the author addresses a few key questions: How the did the Church develop over many centuries in a culture so different from the West? How do Christians in China give witness to their faith? How do they contribute to the life of the universal Church? The answer to such questions provides a meaningful historical background to the broad approach of Pope Benedict XVI in His Letter to the Catholics in China issued on June 30, 2007."--Publishers webpage.

Literary representations of Christianity in Late Qing and Republican China / by John T.P. Lai.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

Introduction: literary turn in the study of Chinese Christianity -- Empire re-mapped: image of Britain in Karl Gützlaff's novels -- Bible in fiction: Chinese Protestant novels of the late nineteenth century -- Bible on stage: Chinese Catholic dramas of the Republican Period -- Saints re-membered: Chinese dramatization of martyrdom -- Popular reception: Chinese folk imagination of Christianity -- Poetic inspiration: biblical imageries in modern Chinese poetry -- Pilgrims re-progressed: Christian interpretation of The Journey to the West -- Conclusion

Literary Representations of Christianity in Late Qing and Republican China' contributes to the "literary turn" in the study of Chinese Christianity by foregrounding the importance of literary texts, including the major genres of Chinese Christian literature (novels, drama and poetry) of the late Qing and Republican periods. These multifarious types of texts demonstrated the multiple representations and dynamic scenes of Christianity, where Christian imageries and symbolism were transformed by linguistic manipulation into new contextualized forms which nurtured distinctive new fruits of literature and modernized the literary landscape of Chinese literature. The study of the composition and poetics of Chinese Christian literary works helps us rediscover the concerns, priorities, textual strategies of the Christian writers, the cross-cultural challenges involved, and the reception of the Bible.

"A New History of Christianity in China, written by one of the world's the leading writers on Christianity in China, looks at Christianity's long history in China, its extraordinarily rapid rise in the last half of the twentieth century, and charts its future direction. Provides the first comprehensive history of Christianity in China, an important, understudied area in both Asian studies and religious history Traces the transformation of Christianity from an imported, Western religion to a thoroughly Chinese religion Contextualizes the growth of Christianity in China within national and local politics Offers a portrait of the complex religious scene in China today Contrasts China with other non-Western societies where Christianity is surging"--
"In this new book, one of the world's the leading writers in the field, looks at Christianity's long history in China, its extraordinarily rapid rise in the last half of the twentieth century, and charts its future direction. Bays expertly tracks the expansion of Christianity in China from the seventh century to the present day, charting how a religion first brought into China by a foreign mission has been adapted by the local population into part of their religious landscape. Beginning with the Nestorian mission in the seventh century, Bays presents a bold reinterpretation which reveals a process that was closely bound up with national and local politics. The account moves through the expansion of Christianity in the Dynastic era, its survival under fire in the mid-1900s, and the growth of the Chinese Church from the end of the Cultural Revolution to the early twenty-first century. The book concludes with an examination of the way in which China is both similar to and different from other non-Western societies-for example Africa, Korea, Indonesia, and the Pacific Islands-where Christianity is surging. Throughout, A New History of Christianity in China offers a broad scope and incorporates the major scholarship of the last 30 years, weaving a balanced narrative of Christianity's long history in China, tracing its transformation from an imported, Western religion to a thoroughly Chinese religion today"--Provided by publisher.

Setting off from Macau :  essays on Jesuit history during the Ming and Qing dynasties / by Tang Kaijian.

Translated from the Chinese.

Includes bibliographical references (pages [283]-298) and index.

Origins and development of Catholicism in Macau during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties -- Macau and the spread of Catholicism in mainland China during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties -- Japanese Christians in Macau and the Guangdong government's response -- The rise and fall of Catholicism in Hainan during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties -- Funding Jesuit missionary work in China during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties -- Catholic art in Macau and mainland China during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties -- Catholic music in Macau and mainland China during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties -- Jesuit clock diplomacy and the use of western clocks during the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties.

It is impossible to understand the early history of the Society of Jesus and the Catholic Church in China without understanding the preeminent role played by the island of Macau in the Jesuit missionary endeavor; indeed, it can even be said that Catholicism would not exist in China if there was no Macau. This book seeks to restore Macau to its proper place in the history of Catholicism and the Jesuit missions in China during the Ming and Qing dynasties by offering a unique insight into subjects ranging from the origins of Jesuit missionary work on the island to the history of Jesuit education and Catholic art and music on the Chinese mainland.-- Provided by Publisher.

NoteA star in the East : the rise of Christianity in China / Rodney Stark and Xiuhua Wang.
Includes bibliographical references (pages [131]-139) and index.

Contents: The new religious awakening in China -- Christian missions to China: 1860-1950 -- Repression and Christian resistance -- Converting the educated -- Converting rural China -- Future prospects and consequences.

Stark approaches the topic from an extensive research background in both Christianity and Chinese history, and Wang provides an inside look at Christianity and its place in her home country of China. Both authors cover the history of religion in China, disproving older theories concerning not only the number of Christians, but the kinds of Christians that have emerged in the past 155 years. Stark and Wang claim that when just considering the visible Christians, those not part of underground churches, there are still thousands of Chinese being converted to Christianity each day, and forty new churches opening each week. A Star in the East draws on two major national surveys to sketch a close-up of religion in China. A reliable estimate is that by 2007 there were approximately 60 million Christians in China. If the current rate of growth were to hold until 2030, there would be more Christians in China—about 295 million—than in any other nation on earth. This has significant implications, not just for China but for the greater world order. It is probable that Chinese Christianity will splinter into denominations, likely leading to the same kinds of political, social, and economic ramifications seen in the West today.--OCLC note.
