China at the center : Ricci and Verbiest world maps / Natasha Reichle, editor ; with essays by M. Antoni J. Ucerler, Theodore N. Foss, and Mark Stephen Mir.
Accompanies the "China at the Center" exhibition at the AAM and associated exhibit and symposium organized by the Ricci Institute at the University of San Francisco.
Includes bibliographical references.

Foreword / Jay Xu -- Preface. Mapping the marvelous / Natasha Reichle -- Missionaries, mandarins, and maps: reimagining the known world / M. Antoni J. Ucerler, SJ -- Ricci’s world map: the 1602 Kunyu wanguo quantu / Theodore N. Foss -- All under heaven: visions of far lands in the Verbiest world map of 1674 / Mark Stephen Mir.

"Global exploration in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries led to new interactions between Europe and Asia. Jesuit priests were instrumental in spreading knowledge of the world to China and information about China to Europe. China at the Center focuses on two masterpieces of seventeenth-century map-making that illustrate this exchange of information (and misinformation). The first map is the Kunyu wanguo quantu, or Map of the Ten Thousand Countries of the Earth, also known as the 1602 Ricci map, after Matteo Ricci, the Jesuit priest who helped create it. The second is the 1674 Verbiest world map, which was also made by a Jesuit priest, Ferdinand Verbiest, for the Chinese court. These two maps are among the earliest, rarest, and largest woodblock-printed maps to survive from the period. They will be examined through the lens of the development of cartography in China and through the biographies of the fascinating men who were instrumental in their production. Maps are political objects, and the inclusion of elaborate and extensive notations on both these maps illustrate the fascinating relationships between the Jesuits and the Chinese courts. These maps represent the meeting of two worldviews, and the information they contain provided Europeans with greater knowledge of China and the Chinese with new ideas about geography, astronomy, and the natural sciences. This book accompanies the exhibition China at the Center, at the Asian Art Museum March 4-May 8, 2016, which brings together the 1602 Ricci map from the James Ford Bell Trust in Minneapolis and the 1674 Verbiest map from the Library of Congress in Washington D.C"-- Provided by publisher.

"One important dimension of Chinese art in the first half of the 20th century was an emphasis on individualism which emerged in the context of nationalist fervor. At the same time, together with an increased exposure to foreign ideas, there was a sense of identification with the culture of the past. These characteristics came together in a Chinese Christian school of painting which arose in Beijing between the two world wars at the Catholic University of Beijing, but lasted only until 1949. The university was founded by American Benedictine monks from Latrobe, Pennsylvania in 1925. Two years later, the Ministry of Education recognized it under the Chinese name Furen, an expression taken from the Analects of Confucius (Book XII, ch.24) which can be translated "promotion of righteousness."
The University had an art department which stressed Chinese traditional painting. By 1943 a separate section of European art had been added. Several faculty members began to paint Christian subjects in Chinese style. They were encouraged by Archbishop Celso Costantini (1876-1958), first Apostolic Delegate of the Vatican to China. He had been a devotee of the arts for many years. Already in 1923, one year after his assignment to China, he had encouraged the development of a distinctive Chinese Christian art. He had four beliefs: Western style art is a style unsuited to China; Western Christian art used in China gives the impression that Christianity is a Western, not universal religion; the Church throughout its history has adopted and adapted local art forms; Chinese art and culture provide many opportunities for adoption and adaptation. In 1937, the first Chinese Catholic Art Exhibit was held at Furen University.

Luke Chen, a prominent leader of the Furen University painters, in describing this Chinese Christian art form said: "I believe that when I paint the wonders of Christianity according to the ancient rules of Chinese art, the painted object exerts an externally new and unusual effect, so that at the same time I enrich to a marked degree, the old rules of Chinese painting."
This observation of Luke Chen rings true. Similar to the icons of the Russian and Greek Churches, Christian paintings in Chinese style inspire a certain sense of divinity and reverence.

The paintings displayed in this exhibit were all painted on silk in Beijing about the 1930s and 1940s. They were brought to France shortly thereafter. In 1992 they were acquired by the Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural History of the Center for the Pacific Rim at the University of San Francisco. The paintings were mounted on scrolls in Hong Kong through the kindness of the Instituto Cultural de Macau after an exhibit in Macau from November 1994 to January 1995. The Paintings were then displayed at the Missao de Macau in Lisbon from December 1995 to March 1996. Later in 1996 they were exhibited in San Francisco at the Pacific Heritage Museum.
The paintings presented here have as their main subjects Jesus; Mary, the Mother of Jesus; Joseph the husband of Mary and guardian of Jesus. The themes are inspired from the gospels, the basic Christian documents which treat the life and teachings of Jesus, His death and resurrection. The paintings on exhibit are inspired especially by those parts of the gospels which treat the announcement of the coming of Jesus, Son of God from heaven into the world; His birth; His childhood. Only one painting here portrays Jesus as an adult. Some of the paintings of Mary depict her surrounded by clouds to express her special closeness to Heaven.
In other parts of the world, such as Rome, Sankt Augustin (Germany) and Taipei, original paintings from the Furen school can still be found. These also represent episodes from the life of Christ as narrated in the four gospels, and the range of themes is broader.

The paintings were mounted on scrolls in Hong Kong through the kindness of the Instituto Cultural de Macau after an exhibit in Macau from November 1994 to January 1995. The paintings were then displayed at the Missão de Macau in Lisbon from December 1995 to March 1996. Later in 1996 they were exhibited in San Francisco at the Pacific Heritage Museum and at Grace Cathedral. In 1998 they were exhibited at the USF Thacher Gallery, and in 2008 they were shown at the St. Aloysius College in Sydney, Australia, for World Youth Day." -- from the exhibit program by Fr. Edward Malatesta, S.J.

Nü Duo was the first magazine for women published by the Christian Literature Society. Its contents include scientific knowledge, culture, literature, family and religion. Nü Duo was in circulation between 1912 and 1951 with a total of 412 issues. .... in April 2006, a DVD-ROM publication agreement with Guangxi Normal University Press was established. "Nü Duo (A Woman’s Messenger), also known as Nü To Pao in its early years, was started as a monthly magazine by the Christian Literature Society for China in April 1912 and ceased publication in 1951. It’s founding editor was Mrs. Laura White, an American. Later editors included: Mrs. E.B. MacGillivray, Li Guanfang, Zhu Yimei, and Liu Meili. The main columns in the journal focused on household management, learning, family values, fiction, biographies, literature, current affairs and drama. Articles shared the following characteristics: First, writers presented Christian thoughts and ethics through explanations of fundamental Christian moral concepts, women’s responsibilities, and the relationship between Christianity and Chinese society. Secod, writers, drew special attention to the changing social status of women by introducing developments in related issues in Europe , the United States, and the Soviet Union. Women were encourged to be involved in professional careers so as to seek changes in their own destiny and to establish equal relationships between men and women. Third, the journal presented knowledge on science and household care, including basic medical information on child care with guidance on how to maintain a harmonious family and ideal companionship. Fourth, it maintained distinguished political attitudes during important historical periods towards such crucial events as the anti-Japanese war and the establishment of the People’s Republic......In 1947, its circulation reached 3,000 copies per issue. Scholars consider Nü Duo to be the first Chinese women’s publication by a commercial press in China." -- Introduction.

This collection was named 'Celestial Icons' after the initial discovery, mounting, and exhibition tour in 1994.

"The paintings on silk presently exhibited at the Bishop's Residence are a sample of the type of creative work encouraged by Cardinal Celso Costantini during his term as Nuncio in China from 1922 onwards ... in 1925 he invited the Benedictine artist, Adelbert Gresnigt, to come to Peking, to help in the construction of Fujen Catholic University which was to be built in Chinese style ... (where) a department of religious art was created ... we owe this exhibition to the solicitude of Rev. Edward J. Malatesta, S.J., Director of the Ricci Institute ... these works belong to the Ricci Institute and have been kindly offered for display during the commemorative activities of the "IVth Centenary of the University College of St. Paul."--Preface.

Reference guide to Christian missionary societies in China : from the sixteenth to the twentieth century / R.G. Tiedemann.
"An East Gate book."
"Copyright 2009 by Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural History"--colophon.
Includes bibliographical references and indexes.

Pub. Description: This comprehensive guide will facilitate scholarly research concerning the history of Christianity in China as well as the wider Sino-Western cultural encounter. It will assist scholars in their search for material on the anthropological, educational, medical, scientific, social, political, and religious dimensions of the missionary presence in China prior to 1950.
The guide contains nearly five hundred entries identifying both Roman Catholic and Protestant missionary sending agencies and related religious congregations. Each entry includes the organization's name in English, followed by its Chinese name, country of origin, and denominational affiliation. Special attention has been paid to identifying the many small, lesser-known groups that arrived in China during the early decades of the twentieth century. In addition, a special category of the as yet little-studied indigenous communities of Chinese women has also been included. Multiple indexes enhance the guide's accessibility.

NoteStudies in the history of Christianity in East Asia [series] / editors-in-chief, M. Antoni J. Ucerler, SJ, Wu Xiaoxin 吳小新. Editorial Assistant Stephen P. Ford.
Editorial Board: Donald L. Baker, Anthony Clark, Kiri Paramore, Stephen J. Roddy.

The primary focus of this new peer-reviewed monograph series will be the study of Christianity in East Asia. It will reflect “local” (i.e. Chinese, Japanese and Korean) themes as well as comparative perspectives that explore the historical, cultural, and religious connections that mark the interactions between these countries. Subject matter may include but is not limited to: church history, cultural anthropology, historical linguistics, history of science and medicine, global history, and comparative studies. The series will also include critical studies of primary sources related to the history of Christianity in East Asia and/or critical translations of those sources, with accompanying commentary and critical apparatus. Influential works in the field hitherto published only in Japanese, Chinese, or Korean respectively will be carefully selected, translated into English, and made available to an international audience with the aim of promoting scholarly dialogue beyond local linguistic constituencies.

EUCHINA note: annotated translation of Fonti Ricciane (1942, vols. I-II) with consultation of the Quodlibet edition (2000) of Della entrata della Compagnia di Giesù e Christianità nella Cina.

This is the first Chinese literal translation of Della entrata / Fonti Ricciane. The translation that came out in 1983 (reprinted in 1997, 2001 and 2010) of Ricci’s report is based on Gallagher’s English translation (1953) of Trigault’s Latin translation /adaptation (1615) of Ricci’s text: 利瑪竇中國札記 (Beijing: Zhonghua shuju). Another translation (利瑪竇全集, vols. 1-2) that came out in 1986 (Taibei) is based on Fonti Ricciane. However, in the course of time this 1986 translation was deemed to contain too many mistakes and at times to be more a paraphrase of the original than a translation.
(A second volume, containing translations of all Ricci's extant letters is forthcoming in 2015)--(Adrian Dudink).

"This volume is a collection of almost 4,000 church-related works from the rare documents repository of the Shanghai Municipal Archives. These documents encompass the era from 1836-1963, with contents that touch upon the Roman Catholic Church, the Chinese Protestant Church, the China Branch of the Seventh Day Adventists, Chinese Christian youth associations and 32 other denominations and church-related organizations. Shanghai has historically been the city where the majority of Christian groups were established, and in the 70 year span beginning in 1879 until the founding of New China, the printing presses of Shanghai-area Catholic and Protestant organizations published a great variety of periodical literature, both locally and countrywide. Christian publishing organizations of a national character were likewise published in Shanghai, leaving as their legacy a large quantity of religious publications and printed materials."

"Among the source documents included in this compilation are those of various Christian groups from different time periods, who published periodicals in great variety, with similarly varied contents. The archives are not without rare books and unique volumes as well, including the inaugural editions of several rare periodicals. These sources provide a minute, highly detailed historical reflection of each church group’s organizational and structural development, including historical outlines, annual reports, yearbooks, records of important events, and centenary commemorative editions. In addition to these items, there are publications which reflect the attitudes of the religious community both prior to and the Sino-Japanese war and its aftermath, which are sources deserving of study. The contents of this volume total 3,785 entries, cataloged and compiled according to international bibliographic standards, and include detailed annotation and critical apparatus for Chinese and Western sources listed by title, author, publishing organization, publication date and other information. With an appended six-category index, this catalog will profitably assist the study of the history of religion, religious education, and Chinese-Western cultural history. This volume is a joint publication of the Shanghai Municipal Archives and the Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural History of the University of San Francisco."
