本書西文部分主要採用美國國會圖書館分類法分類，索引按字母順序排序，日文部分按學科分類，索引按筆劃排序；俄文部分按《中圖法》分類，索引按字母順序排序。本目錄所收善本即目前善本特藏部書庫的藏品。

圖書簡介 
2000年，在西文善本書計算機回溯編目項目的基礎上，國家圖書館善本部的工作人員對館藏進行了核對，改正了原編目卡片中的一些錯誤。善本部、採編部和信息網絡部的20餘位工作人員參與了計算機回溯編目和中文題名的翻譯工作，並參考《簡明不列顛百科全書》、《中國大百科全書》、《近代來華外國人名辭典》、《在華耶穌會士列傳及書目》、《在華耶穌會士列傳及書目補編》和《佛光大辭典》等工具書，對人名和書名的譯名進行了統一。

由於歷史的原因，有一些俄文圖書採用羅馬化的方式進行了編目，本書目仍以原樣著錄，收入西文部分。對於本身含有中文題名的圖書，我們直接採用了其原中文題名，並附以中文解釋。對於本身不含中文題名的圖書，中文譯名由編者提供。編者還將一些通用的人名譯名（如馬克思）、傳教士的漢名（如金尼閣）、通用的書名譯名（如《資本論》）和譯著的漢語原名（如《趙氏孤兒》）編制了中文索引，便於讀者從多種途徑檢索。

此外，編者還根據美國國會圖書館(The Library of Congress)、法國國家圖書館(La Bibliothèque nationale de France)和西班牙國家圖書館(Biblioteca Nacional)的聯機公共目錄，對大多數西文條目的著錄進行了修訂，更詳細地描述了善本館藏，並規範了著者名稱。本書目的著者人名主要依據美國國會圖書館和法國國家圖書館的著錄，其中少數著者的生卒年代可能有誤，編者沒有進行更詳細的考證。

本目錄所收入的國家圖書館藏外文善本，即目前善本特藏部書庫的西文、日文、俄文藏品。也許其中有一些不應作為善本，但是由於歷史原因已經進入了善本書庫，我們也沒有進行糾正。除了善本書庫的善本書以外，在國家圖書館基藏書庫所藏的普通外文圖書和未經過加工整理的外文圖書中，也不乏可以作為善本者。在短期內，我們不可能馬上將其整理出版。

本書目收入西文善本1234種、日文善本299種、俄文善本420種。在西文善本中，有不少是早期來華傳教士的著作，例如《金尼閣於1610年和1611年在中國寫給耶穌會會長的兩封信》(Dve lettere annve della Cina del 1610 e del 1611, scritte al M.R.P. Clavdio Acqvaviva, Generale della Compagnia di Giesv)（1615年）和《基督教遠征中國史》(Histoire de l'expedition chrestienne en la Chine)（1618年）；一些是16世紀出版的圖書，例如希臘語和拉丁語版《伊索寓言》(Aesopi Phrygis Fabvlae graece et latinè)（1544年）和《東印度史》(Historia dell'Indie Orientali)（1578年）；另一些則是外交官的回憶錄，例如《馬戛爾尼伯爵在中國內地和韃靼的遊記（1792, 1793, 1794年）》(Voyage dans l'interieur de la Chine, et en Tartarie, fait dans les années 1792, 1793, et 1794)（1804年）。在俄文善本中，有《俄羅斯英明改革家彼得大帝業績》(Деяния Петра Велиого, мудрого преобразителя России)（1788年）和《西伯利亞史：從其被發現到被俄國武力征服》(Сибирская история с самого открытия Сибири до завоеваеия сей земли российским оружием)（1774年）。

在西文部分中，還有不少圖書是中文原著的翻譯本。其中，由殷鐸澤(Intorcetta)等耶穌會會士翻譯的《西文四書直解》，是《論語》最早的西方版本，其拉丁文題名的原意是《中國哲學家孔子. 用拉丁文解釋中國人的智慧》(Confucius Sinarum Philosophus, sive Scientia Sinensis Latine Exposita)，後來的許多《論語》的譯本都是在此基礎上發展出來的；又如，1834年在巴黎出版的儒蓮(Stanislas Julien)翻譯的《趙氏孤兒》法語版(Tchao-chi-kou-eul, ou, L'orphelin de la Chine : drame en prose et en vers)和同年在巴黎出版的《伏爾泰全集》(Oeuvres de Voltaire)中的《中國孤兒》(L'Orphelin de la Chine)，反映了中國戲劇與法國戲劇的密切關係；此外，還有1826年在巴黎出版的雷慕沙(Jean Pierre Abel Rémusat)翻譯的《玉嬌梨》(Iu-kiao-li : ou, Les deux cousines; roman chinois)和1829年在倫敦出版的德庇時爵士(John Francis Davis)翻譯的《漢宮愁》(Han Koong Tsew, or, The sorrows of Han : a Chinese tragedy)等等。通過這本目錄，我們可以管窺中國文化在西方國家傳播的大致脈絡。

早期來華外國人的著述也是本書目的一個重要部分，例如1666年出版的《羅歷山在中國及其他東方王國之旅》(Divers voiages dv P. Alexandre de Rhodes en la Chine)、1834年郭施拉著(Karl Friedrich August Gützlaff)的《1831年、1832年和1833年間沿中國海岸的三次航海日誌》(Journal of three voyages along the coast of China, in 1831, 1832, & 1833)、《英國駐華使館記事（1792、1793和1794年）》(A narrative of the British embassy to China, in the years 1792, 1793, and 1794)等等。這些藏品是研究中國對外關係史的重要資料。

還有一些出版年代並不很早，但是印刷精美、限量發行的圖書，例如1999年出版的《中國珍稀鳥類》(Rare birds of China)、1946年的加泰羅尼亞語版《金曲：中國詩歌賞析》(L'aire daurat : interpretacions de poesia xinesa)等。

本書目西文部分的主要部分採用美國國會圖書館分類法分類，按相應的索書號排序；西文圖書中有一小部分近年編目的圖書，採用《中國圖書館圖書分類法》分類，按相應的索書號排序；西文部分索引按字母順序排序，數字在最前，希臘字母在拉丁字母后，漢字按拼音與西文混排。日文部分按學科編排，索引按筆劃排序。俄文部分按《中圖法》分類，用排架號排序，索引按字母順序排序。

最後要說明的是，在國家圖書館外文善本圖書中，原北堂藏書是十分珍貴的一部分。當時的圖書館管理員於貝爾·熱爾曼·維爾哈倫(Hubert Germain Verhaeren)在1944年至1948年間已經編制了《北堂圖書館目錄》(Catalogue of the Pei-T'ang Library)，在國際上享有一定的聲譽。本目錄中並沒有包括這部分的藏書。如果讀者有興趣，可以直接去國家圖書館查閱北堂書目。
