"Nü Duo (A Woman’s Messenger), also known as Nü To Pao in its early years, was started as a monthly magazine by the Christian Literature Society for China in April 1912 and ceased publication in 1951. It’s founding editor was Mrs. Laura White, an American. Later editors included: Mrs. E.B. MacGillivray, Li Guanfang, Zhu Yimei, and Liu Meili. The main columns in the journal focused on household management, learning, family values, fiction, biographies, literature, current affairs and drama. Articles shared the following characteristics: First, writers presented Christian thoughts and ethics through explanations of fundamental Christian moral concepts, women’s responsibilities, and the relationship between Christianity and Chinese society. Secod, writers, drew special attention to the changing social status of women by introducing developments in related issues in Europe , the United States, and the Soviet Union. Women were encourged to be involved in professional careers so as to seek changes in their own destiny and to establish equal relationships between men and women. Third, the journal presented knowledge on science and household care, including basic medical information on child care with guidance on how to maintain a harmonious family and ideal companionship. Fourth, it maintained distinguished political attitudes during important historical periods towards such crucial events as the anti-Japanese war and the establishment of the People’s Republic......In 1947, its circulation reached 3,000 copies per issue. Scholars consider Nü Duo to be the first Chinese women’s publication by a commercial press in China." -- Introduction.

NoteThe Penalty of Piety: The Benedictine Beginning of Fu Jen Catholic University in Peking ..." is a radio docudrama arranged in a series of sixteen moments leading up to the purchase of property for the Catholic University of Peking in February 1925." --liner note.
The Penalty of Piety: The Benedictine Beginning of Fu Jen Catholic University in Peking (42:11) / Llyn Margaret Scott.
An interview reflecting on the Benedictine Fu Jen Catholic University Peking (25:04) / Dr. Wu Xiaoxin and Fr. Michel Marcil, S.J.

Historical Background
Four historical studies provide the background and characters for the docudrama: (1) Chapter Six titled “Mission to China (1918 – 1930)” in Mission to America: A History of Saint Vincent Archabbey, The First Benedictine Monastery in the United States by Jerome Oetgen; (2) “Ying Lien-Chih (1866-1926) and The Rise of Fu Jen, the Catholic University of Peking, by Donald Paragon, reprinted from Monumenta Serica Vol. XX, 1921; (3) the unpublished dissertation, “Catholic Higher Education in China: The Rise and Fall of Fu Jen University in Beijing,” submitted by Rev. John Shujie Chen to the Lynch Graduate School of Education at Boston College, 2003; and (4) the unpublished dissertation, “A Case Study of the Catholic University of Peking During the Benedictine Period (1927-1933),” written by Dr. Xiaoxin Wu and presented to the School of Education at the University of San Francisco, 1993. Other relevant historical notes were gathered from among letters by Archabbot Aurelius Stehle, Fr. Ildephonse Brandstetter, Fr. Placidus Rattenberger, and Fr. George Barry O’Toole between the years 1923 and 1924, in the St. Vincent Archabbey files belonging to Dr. Nicholas Koss, OSB, Dean of the College of Foreign Languages and Literature at Fu Jen Catholic University in Taipei.

General Notes on Lot 20:
Chinese texts are copies on rice paper in Chinese ink, probably by a secretary. Some are marked as having been sent (to Macau?) by Fr. Pedro Muñoz, O.P. (from Guangzhou?). Some have Latin translations, often in a fine secretarial hand, and attested by either Andreas Candela, the Patriarch's Chancellor, or by J.F. Martin de la Balvere - both in Macau. Some of the translations are in Spanish (by Muñoz?). The comments on the outside may be in the hand of Candela and contain details of provenance (often "con una Lettera del P. Muñoz"), summary of contents and dates. They are usually in Italian, sometimes in Latin (the Latin ones perhaps in a different hand).
Since they deal with the arrival of Pedrini & Co. early in 1710, they cannot come from this group of Italian Propagandists, but must come from one of de Toumon's suite, and not Sala who had already left for Europe. Some of the Chinese documents (e.g. 6, 21) have pronunciation notes added to the copy, especially re the pronunciation of names. Some (e.g. 25) have Latin notes and Italian notes in different hands. Probably all come from the Sala papers, and the annotations appear to be his, but perhaps as used later in Europe by one of the compilers of narratives of the legation, such as Cardinal Passionei. [Note by Paul Rule.]

NoteStudies in the history of Christianity in East Asia [series] / editors-in-chief, M. Antoni J. Ucerler, SJ, Wu Xiaoxin 吳小新. Editorial Assistant Stephen P. Ford.
Editorial Board: Donald L. Baker, Anthony Clark, Kiri Paramore, Stephen J. Roddy.

The primary focus of this new peer-reviewed monograph series will be the study of Christianity in East Asia. It will reflect “local” (i.e. Chinese, Japanese and Korean) themes as well as comparative perspectives that explore the historical, cultural, and religious connections that mark the interactions between these countries. Subject matter may include but is not limited to: church history, cultural anthropology, historical linguistics, history of science and medicine, global history, and comparative studies. The series will also include critical studies of primary sources related to the history of Christianity in East Asia and/or critical translations of those sources, with accompanying commentary and critical apparatus. Influential works in the field hitherto published only in Japanese, Chinese, or Korean respectively will be carefully selected, translated into English, and made available to an international audience with the aim of promoting scholarly dialogue beyond local linguistic constituencies.

"This volume is a collection of almost 4,000 church-related works from the rare documents repository of the Shanghai Municipal Archives. These documents encompass the era from 1836-1963, with contents that touch upon the Roman Catholic Church, the Chinese Protestant Church, the China Branch of the Seventh Day Adventists, Chinese Christian youth associations and 32 other denominations and church-related organizations. Shanghai has historically been the city where the majority of Christian groups were established, and in the 70 year span beginning in 1879 until the founding of New China, the printing presses of Shanghai-area Catholic and Protestant organizations published a great variety of periodical literature, both locally and countrywide. Christian publishing organizations of a national character were likewise published in Shanghai, leaving as their legacy a large quantity of religious publications and printed materials."

"Among the source documents included in this compilation are those of various Christian groups from different time periods, who published periodicals in great variety, with similarly varied contents. The archives are not without rare books and unique volumes as well, including the inaugural editions of several rare periodicals. These sources provide a minute, highly detailed historical reflection of each church group’s organizational and structural development, including historical outlines, annual reports, yearbooks, records of important events, and centenary commemorative editions. In addition to these items, there are publications which reflect the attitudes of the religious community both prior to and the Sino-Japanese war and its aftermath, which are sources deserving of study. The contents of this volume total 3,785 entries, cataloged and compiled according to international bibliographic standards, and include detailed annotation and critical apparatus for Chinese and Western sources listed by title, author, publishing organization, publication date and other information. With an appended six-category index, this catalog will profitably assist the study of the history of religion, religious education, and Chinese-Western cultural history. This volume is a joint publication of the Shanghai Municipal Archives and the Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural History of the University of San Francisco."
