This collection was named 'Celestial Icons' after the initial discovery, mounting, and exhibition tour in 1994.

"The paintings on silk presently exhibited at the Bishop's Residence are a sample of the type of creative work encouraged by Cardinal Celso Costantini during his term as Nuncio in China from 1922 onwards ... in 1925 he invited the Benedictine artist, Adelbert Gresnigt, to come to Peking, to help in the construction of Fujen Catholic University which was to be built in Chinese style ... (where) a department of religious art was created ... we owe this exhibition to the solicitude of Rev. Edward J. Malatesta, S.J., Director of the Ricci Institute ... these works belong to the Ricci Institute and have been kindly offered for display during the commemorative activities of the "IVth Centenary of the University College of St. Paul."--Preface.
