Note | Distant souls : global religion and the Jesuit Missions of Germany, Mexico, and China, 1595-1705 / by Luke Sean Clossey. Thesis (Ph. D., History)--University of California, Berkeley, Spring 2004. Includes bibliographical references (leaves 505-559). “This dissertation suggests the new knowledge to be won by approaching the Jesuit missions as a macrohistorical phenomenon. Its first half, using the concept of local religion as a foil, develops the idea of "global religion" and suggests why the Jesuits' mentality can only be understood in a world-spanning context. Global religion also served to give legitimacy to a developing world church, to fuel (and to be fueled by) the Jesuit world missionary project.”—OCLC note.

Note | New perspectives in the studies on Matteo Ricci / edited by Filippo Mignini. Proceedings of a conference in Macerata, 21-23 October 2015. Includes bibliographical references and index. Matteo Ricci (Macerata, 1552 – Beijing, 1610) was the first Westerner to establish a deep reciprocal relationship of knowledge and friendship between Europe and China. He still remains today, for the two civilizations, a symbol and a model of mutual relations. This volume proposes new studies in three research areas. The first deals with new or unpublished documents in Chinese concerning Matteo Ricci and his interlocutors. The aim of this investigation is to provide a more nuanced and precise reconstruction of Ricci’s experience by relying on a full knowledge of events and records. Secondly, the volume suggests new ways of analysing Ricci’s works by examining a number of topics that have never been explored before, or by focusing on writings that still need to be properly understood. The third theme of the volume is the effort in self-understanding among European scholars prompted by Ricci and later Jesuits, as well as by other religious orders, especially during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. As a whole, the volume is an essential reference work for those who want to have a better understanding of Matteo Ricci and of the first significant encounter between Europe and China.--p.[4] of cover.

It is impossible to understand the early history of the Society of Jesus and the Catholic Church in China without understanding the preeminent role played by the island of Macau in the Jesuit missionary endeavor; indeed, it can even be said that Catholicism would not exist in China if there was no Macau. This book seeks to restore Macau to its proper place in the history of Catholicism and the Jesuit missions in China during the Ming and Qing dynasties by offering a unique insight into subjects ranging from the origins of Jesuit missionary work on the island to the history of Jesuit education and Catholic art and music on the Chinese mainland.-- Provided by Publisher. Note | Sojourners in a strange land : Jesuits and their scientific missions in late imperial China / Florence C. Hsia. Local access dig.pdf. [Hsia-Sojouners in a strange land.pdf] Though Jesuits assumed a variety of roles as missionaries in late imperial China, their most memorable guise was that of scientific expert, whose maps, clocks, astrolabes, and armillaries reportedly astonished the Chinese. But the icon of the missionary-scientist is itself a complex myth. Masterfully correcting the standard story of China Jesuits as simple conduits for Western science, Florence C. Hsia shows how these missionary-scientists remade themselves as they negotiated the place of the profane sciences in a religious enterprise. Sojourners in a Strange Land develops a genealogy of Jesuit conceptions of scientific life within the Chinese mission field from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries. Analyzing the printed record of their endeavors in natural philosophy and mathematics, Hsia identifies three models of the missionary man of science by their genres of writing: mission history, travelogue, and academic collection. Drawing on the history of early modern Europe’s scientific, religious, and print culture, she uses the elaboration and reception of these scientific personae to construct the first collective biography of the Jesuit missionary-scientist’s many incarnations in late imperial China. --Publisher page |
