Publishers note-- In this volume, an effort has been made to extend our research to hitherto less developed aspects of the life and work of Ferdinand Verbiest (°1623-+1688). Two of the five papers collected here concern his involvement in the translation of the Latin commentaries on Aristotle published in Coimbra, which had been begun by Furtado, Aleni and others, and which he continued and completed until its 'official' presentation to the emperor in 1683. The contents of this voluminous work, entitled Qiongli xue are analysed by N. Standaert & A. Dudink (Leuven) on the basis of an (incomplete) copy of the manuscript, whereas N. Golvers (Leuven) describes its growth process out of a series of references in 'Western' sources; again each approach complements the other, and the flaws of one type of source are balanced by the virtues of the other. Verbiest's purely pastoral work is represented by this treatise 'on the sacrament of penance' (Goaojie yuanyi [sic], i.e. Gaojie yuanyi), which is analysed in depth by J.W. Witek (Washington DC). On the other hand there is Verbiest's relation to the calendar problem and the Astronomical Bureau (Qintianjian), so often studied without ever exhausting the subject; his work is appropriately described in terms of the 'history of science', as a key moment in the transmission of Western astronomical knowledge to the Far East. In his paper, however, Xu Haisong (Hangzhou) investigates the reception of Verbiest's learning in the milieu of the traditional Bureau, mainly on the basis of Chinese primary sources. The presence of more specific Christian elements in the same Bureau can be pointed out during the seventeenth and eighteenth century, when it even exerts some influence on contemporary Chinese Christianity, in such dossiers as the Rites Controversy. (Han Qi, Beijing). But the Jesuit mission was far more than the mission of Beijing. The scene beyond the capital is present in this issue in a description of the missionary approach applied in Suzhou Prefecture (Jiangnan Province) by Franciscus de Rougemont (°1624-+1676) - a former fellow of F. Verbiest in the Flemish Jesuit colleges, and always in contact with him in China as well. Here again Western documents are the almost exclusive sources, illustrating many aspects of the Jesuit presence in the Chinese interior.

"This book contains two manuscript texts of Ferdinand Verbiest, S.J. (1623-1688), written in 1676 in Beijing to the attention of the Russian tsar, and brought by the legate Nicolas Spathary Milescu to Moscow. Both texts represent the oldest layer of the Astronomia Europaea corpus, and were until recently forgotten. Their recent discovery was in the form of a manuscript copy, which Chysanthos Notaras had made them in Moscow in 1693. The manuscripts have since then been kept in library of the Metochion of the patriarchate of Jerusalem in Constantinople. In this publication, the authors are reconstituting the Latin text, translating it in English and annotating it. In the Introduction, the manuscripts are situated within the corpus of Verbiest's Latin writings, and are depicted both the parts that were afterwards re-cycled in the well-known Compendium Latinum and Astronomia Europaea edition (Dilingen, 1687), and those that were eventually omitted. Moreover, the story of the Moscow manuscript, and especially that of its Constantinopolitan copy - until now the only remaining testimonium of it - is traced. Ferdinand Verbiest, S.J. (1623-1688) and the Chinese heaven : the composition of the astronomical corpus, its diffusion and reception in the European republic of letters / Noël Golvers.

"This book describes more than 220 copies, nearly all of European provenance, of various astronomical publications by Ferdinand Verbiest, S.J. (1623 - 1688), either xylographical copies sent from Peking (reports, instrument drawings, eclipse maps, ephemeredes; stellar maps), or copies of Astronomia Europaea. This multiplies the number of known copies by ten. The first part of this book describes the characteristics of this astronomical corpus - one of the most spectacular bibliographical testimonia of the Jesuit presence in 17th - 18th century China, and disentangles the complex mutual interrelationship between the various items of this corpus. Moreover, by investigating handwritten dedications and owner's marks, material indications and external testimonia, Golvers sketches the history of the shipments of these documents to Europe, connecting them to the late 1670s, to Ph. Couplet's European 'tour' (1683 - 1692) and to the presence of A. Thomas, S.J. in Peking (late-1685 - 1709).

Behind all these shipments, there is the personal effort of F. Verbiest, and his own handwriting can be recognized in many pieces. After his death, also the French and German Jesuits in Peking continued this diffusion process, albeit to a lesser extent, in their relations with France, the German countries, and St. Petersburg. In the last part of this monograph, several cases are discussed which illustrate how in the 17th - 18th centuries European scholars 'received' these documents, for their astronomical, sinological, historical, linguistic or purely bibliophile aspect. In this part of the inquiry, unknown aspects of the history of many early Chinese collections in Europe are discussed. All in all, this research measures, for the first time, the penetration of Jesuit publications on China in contemporary Europe in quantitative and geographical-historical terms. It also traces the different motivations of these dispatches (i.e. public relations, apology for the particular evangelization methods; offering bibliophile curios in return for support).

Publishers note--This book reconstructs the life of a Jesuit missionary in a small inland residence in China (Ch'ang-shu, Chiang-nan Province), primarily but not exclusively on the basis of the evidence of a newly (re)discovered private Account Book covering the period from October 1674 to April/May 1676. This 'pocket' note book mainly represents the missionary's private expenses, and, to a much lesser extent, the revenues he received. As such it is an exceptional document in the missionary documentation. Absolutely unique is the part concerning his personal 'spiritual' exercises, his successes as well as failings in that field. After a lengthy introduction, in which both the life of the author and the complex composition of the Account Book are reconstructed, the text is presented, in a bilingual Latin - English edition. In seven chapters the contents are further described and analysed from various angles: the general topographical setting; the author's ten journeys through the region in 1674-1676; the social contacts referred to; the various aspects of priestly and pastoral life; the means of propagation, written as well as pictorial; the material culture of the mission; the financial structure of the whole undertaking, including the patterns of expenditure revealed. All the evidence available in this Account Book is combined with other contemporary information, mainly from unpublished sources, including a large number of quotations from the lost Couplet - Rougemont correspondence that has survived in Estrix's Elogium F. de Rougemont (1690), the text of which is also published here for the first time. Thus the Account Book assumes its place as an exceptional private document with a major relevance for the reconstruction of missionary life in China.

A thorough analysis of the sinuous peregrinatio academica of Johann Terrentius Schreck (1576-1630) between 1600-1618 through (South-, Central- and NW-) European universities, academies and courts (at Freiburg /Br.; Paris; Rome; Basel; Padua; Strasbourg, Prague, Kassel, etc.) and his rich correspondence displays a widespread network of contacts, covering a broad range of domains, from medicine to alchemy, pharmacy, botany, and through engineering to (pure and applied) mathematics, and calendar making. In all these domains of the contemporary ?Republic of Letters?, this former student of François Viète (Paris), Galileo (Padua) and ex-Lincean, adept of Copernicus and Paracelsus showed himself to be a passionate scholar with multi-faceted and versatile talents. After 1611, with this very rich experience he entered the Society of Jesus, and shortly afterward he was appointed as companion of Nicolas Trigault, who was touring through Europe (1615-1618) as procurator on behalf of the fledgling Jesuit Mission in China, seeking funds, men, books and scientific instruments. This second phase of intensive travelling through European centers of scholarship, patronage, and printing (including Rome; Venice; Basel; Frankfurt; Cologne, Antwerp, etc.) resulted in an enormous collection of books and instruments, which were dispatched to Lisbon from various points in 1617/1618. Shipped to China, these materials arrived in Macau in 1619, and in Peking in 1625, becoming the core of the Jesuit libraries, mainly in Peking, and the basis for the scholarly activities of the Jesuits over the following decades in the domains of mathematics, calendar making, medicine, etc.

Together with Verbiest’s printed works, this correspondence is the most direct witness of his rich life and activities (1623-1688). It covers the 43 years between his first application for the Indies (1645) and his farewell to the Kangxi Emperor (28.01.1688). Side by side with the copies of his astronomical drawings and eclipse maps, inventoried in F. Verbiest and the Chinese Heaven (2003), these letters reveal a wide-ranging network of contacts, within China and with Europe. The topics are as many and various as the 55 correspondents are different, spanning the whole spectrum from the Jesuits in Moscow to Pedro II in Lisbon, from the Franciscans in Shandong to Pope Innocentius XI and the Cardinals of CPF in Rome.  The topics are related to his successive positions in the Jesuit hierarchy in China, his work as an engineer and ‘astronomer’ for the Court and his international diplomatic interventions, with the Jesuit mission in China as the central argument. Verbiest appears in his letters as a very engaged personality, with strong (but carefully outed) convictions and a wide outlook, which comprises the Peking and European Courts, together with Manila, Goa and Siam in one vision. This edition of 134 letters from and to Verbiest replaces that of Henri Bosmans (ed. by H. Josson and L. Willaert), publ. in Brussels in 1938. It is a critical revision of the formerly known 80 items, with a restitution of the original Chinese transcriptions (due to A. Dudink), all extended with 54 new items, mostly from the Ajuda archives (Lisbon), the latter putting especially the Chinese scene in the focus. Two major documents are added (dated 1661 and 1681), which reflect his talents as a polemic writer; also in various other letters he unfolds scriptorial talents, combined to a sharp sense of observation. All this makes this pluri-linguistic corpus (mainly in Latin and Portuguese) to a first hand testimony of the Jesuit mission in China during the restoration from its crisis (1665-1669) to its apogee, of which many dramatic moments and aspects are revealed by the author, who was the main agent in this process.

This is the first volume of a wide-ranging study of the spread and penetration of Western books in late-Ming, early-Qing China via Jesuit missionaries. The study is based mainly on archival sources (letters,manuscripts, treatises), supplemented with the extant books (‘Beitang collection’), especially those containing an inscription (ca. 2,500). This first volume focuses on the logistics of the book acquisiton: from the selection made in China, through the role of the book agents and donors in Europe, to the delivery routes. The prosopographical study of the names mentioned in the book inscriptions revealsnot only the identity of the original owners and the intentional donors - and by consequence the milieusof interest and participation in the Jesuit mission - but especially the roughly fifteen regional supportnetworks of the mission, ranging from Sicily and the Low Countries, on the one hand, and Mitteleuropa and Portugal, on the other. The next volume will focus on the formation of regional Western libraries inChina (in Peking and the other main cities, but also in ‘minor’ residences), the different ‘classes’ of booksrepresented (from Bible study through sciences to belles lettres), and the different ways these books were used by the Jesuit readers for their missionary goals, within the program of an ‘apostolate of the press’,leading to the transmission to, and reception by, the Chinese literati. As such, this study - when completed - will reveal a largely neglected chapter of European book and reading history, and at the same time a crucial chapter in the intercultural exchange between the late humanistic Western culture and Chinese culture, in which the printed book played a pivotal role.--Publisher webpage.

本書是比利時著名漢學家高華士(Noel Golvers)博士研究天主教傳華史的一部力作，重現了17世紀耶穌會士魯日滿(Franois de Rotagemont，S.J.1624—1676)在中國的傳教活動及生活狀況。魯日滿於17世紀60年代末從比利時來到中國，一直以常熟為中心，在江南地區從事傳教工作。本書的研究對像是作者新近發現的魯日滿在江南的私人賬本，賬本記錄的時間從1674年10月到1675年5月，主要記錄魯日滿的私人花費和部分收入。其中還有他個人的精神生活片斷和一些傳教觀點等。高華士以其深厚的拉丁文素養，將這本賬本翻譯成英文，並用了七章的篇幅對它進行了深入細緻的研究，從而詳細描繪了這位傳教士的具體生活和賬本本身所折射的歷史意義。這是一部極為詳細的專題研究，深入揭示了西方傳教士在明清時期中國的具體活動情況，同時，書中的專章對賬本包含的經濟意義的研究，也很大裨益於中國明清經濟史的研究。
