Note | Chinese voices in the rites controversy : travelling books, community networks, intercultural arguments / Nicolas Standaert. "The Chinese rites controversy in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries is often considered a purely European affair: the Catholic Church questioned whether Chinese rites such as ancestor worship could be practised by Chinese converts. But to what extent did Chinese scholars take part in the debates concerning these rites? An exceptional series of Chinese and European sources preserved in the Roman Archives of the Society of Jesus (ARSI), dating from the year 1701 to 1704, provide new evidence for the Chinese voices in this controversy. These sources include a collection of some 60 Chinese letters (with about 430 different signatories) that were sent to Rome to make their voices heard. These letters provide a unique insight not only into the argumentation but also into the sociological composition of the local Christian communities and their networks at the beginning of the eighteenth century. Note | The Christian mission in China in the Verbiest era : some aspects of the missionary approach / Noël Golvers (ed.). Contents: Preface / Jeroom Heyndrickx -- Introduction / Noël Golvers -- Ferdinand Verbiest's Qiongli xue 窮理學 (1683 ) / Adrian Dudink and Nicolas Standaert -- Verbiest's introduction of Aristoteles Latinus (Coimbra) in China: new Western evidence / Noël Golvers -- Explaining the sacrament of penance in seventeenth-century China: an essay of Ferdinand Verbiest (1623-1688) / John W. Witek -- The reaction of scholars to the work of Ferdinand Verbiest during the Kangxi-Qianlong reign / Xu Haisong 徐海松 -- The role of the directorate of astronomy in the Catholic mission during the Qing period / Han Qi 韓琦 -- Some aspects of the missionary approach of Francois de Rougemont in Changshu, Jiangnan (1661-1676) / Noël Golvers. Publishers note-- In this volume, an effort has been made to extend our research to hitherto less developed aspects of the life and work of Ferdinand Verbiest (°1623-+1688). Two of the five papers collected here concern his involvement in the translation of the Latin commentaries on Aristotle published in Coimbra, which had been begun by Furtado, Aleni and others, and which he continued and completed until its 'official' presentation to the emperor in 1683. The contents of this voluminous work, entitled Qiongli xue are analysed by N. Standaert & A. Dudink (Leuven) on the basis of an (incomplete) copy of the manuscript, whereas N. Golvers (Leuven) describes its growth process out of a series of references in 'Western' sources; again each approach complements the other, and the flaws of one type of source are balanced by the virtues of the other. Verbiest's purely pastoral work is represented by this treatise 'on the sacrament of penance' (Goaojie yuanyi [sic], i.e. Gaojie yuanyi), which is analysed in depth by J.W. Witek (Washington DC). On the other hand there is Verbiest's relation to the calendar problem and the Astronomical Bureau (Qintianjian), so often studied without ever exhausting the subject; his work is appropriately described in terms of the 'history of science', as a key moment in the transmission of Western astronomical knowledge to the Far East. In his paper, however, Xu Haisong (Hangzhou) investigates the reception of Verbiest's learning in the milieu of the traditional Bureau, mainly on the basis of Chinese primary sources. The presence of more specific Christian elements in the same Bureau can be pointed out during the seventeenth and eighteenth century, when it even exerts some influence on contemporary Chinese Christianity, in such dossiers as the Rites Controversy. (Han Qi, Beijing). But the Jesuit mission was far more than the mission of Beijing. The scene beyond the capital is present in this issue in a description of the missionary approach applied in Suzhou Prefecture (Jiangnan Province) by Franciscus de Rougemont (°1624-+1676) - a former fellow of F. Verbiest in the Flemish Jesuit colleges, and always in contact with him in China as well. Here again Western documents are the almost exclusive sources, illustrating many aspects of the Jesuit presence in the Chinese interior. |

Note | Giulio Aleni, Kouduo richao, and Christian-Confucian dialogism in late Ming Fujian / Song Gang. Includes bibliographical references (pages [363]-390), index and Chinese summary. From literary dialogue to cultural dialogism -- Aleni, Fujian Mission, and Kouduo richao -- Practical investigations of heaven and earth -- Spiritual and moral cultivation of man -- Salvation before the eyes : objects, images, and liturgies. "The readers will find in this book a momentous study on Christian dialogic writings that flourished in the Catholic missions in late Ming China. It particularly focuses on the mission work of the Italian Jesuit Giulio Aleni (Ai Rulüe 艾儒略, 1582-1649) in Fujian, and the unique text Kouduo richao 口鐸日抄 (Diary of Oral Admonitions, 1630-1640) recording the religious and intellectual conversations among the Jesuits and local converts. By examining the mechanisms of dialogue in Kouduo richao and other Christian works distinguished by a certain dialogue form, I aim to reveal the formation of a hybrid Christian-Confucian identity in late Ming Chinese religious experience. The book also offers a reconsideration of methodologies used in recent scholarship. My critical reflections will lead to a new approach, i.e., dialogic hybridization. The approach not only treats dialogue as an important yet underestimated genre in late Ming Christian literature, but it also uncovers a self-other identity complex in the dialogic exchanges of the Jesuits and Chinese scholars. The book is a multi-faceted investigation of the religious, philosophical, ethical, scientific, and artistic topics discussed among the Jesuits and late Ming scholars. This comprehensive research echoes what the distinguished sinologist Erik Zürcher (1928-2008) said about the richness and diversity of Chinese Christian texts produced in the 17th and 18th centuries. This book presents another major study featuring a set of new findings beyond the endeavours of Zürcher and other scholars. With the key concept of Christian-Confucian dialogism, it tells an intriguing story of Aleni's mission work and the thriving Christian communities in late Ming Fujian"-- Provided by publisher. Note | Liyi zhi zheng zhong de Zhongguo shengyin 禮儀之爭中的中國聲音 = Chinese voices in the rites controversy / [Bi] Zhong Mingdan zhu ; Chen Yanrong yi. [比]鐘鳴旦著 ; 陳妍蓉譯. Translation of: Chinese voices in the rites controversy: travelling books, community networks, intercultural arguments. Includes facsimile reproductions of a selection of Chinese and Latin documents written between 1701 and 1704 held by the Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu. Documents from ARSI Jap-Sin 137, 157, 160, 165, 167, and I, 206. It fully exploits the richness of these documents with regard to three themes: travelling books, community networks and intercultural arguments. The book includes a reproduction of all the Chinese primary sources."--Publisher note from English edition. |
