China Jesuits in East Asia 1948-1968 / Fernando Mateos SJ, edited by Ryden, Edmund SJ.

6 Volumes

With the publication of the six volumes of China Jesuits in East Asia 1948-1968, the Taipei Ricci Institute is happy to make a major contribution to the history of the Society of Jesus in the Far East during the two decades which followed World War II. These six volumes provide indeed much detailed information on how the dispersal of all the numerous foreign Jesuits and Chinese Jesuit scholastics, who had been ordered to leave China following the takeover by the communist regime in mainland China in 1949, led to the creation of many Jesuit residences and various new and creative works, not only in Taiwan, which was then considered as being Free China, but also in the Philippines, Malaysia-Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

This publication is, primarily and principally, the fruit of the patient labour of Fr Fernando Mateos沈起元神父, SJ (1920-2015) who, during the two last decades of the last century, collected an incredible number of written documents and oral interviews before writing a first draft of the whole work in two thick volumes. From Matteos’ initial work, however, only the first volume Starting from Zero 1949-1957 was published in 1995, without an index and in poor English.

Then came the contribution of Fr Edmund Ryden雷敦龢神父, SJ who not only revised the whole work in his native language, but reorganized the chapters of the initial work into six thinner volumes, each of which concerns a specific area, a specific period of time and/or specific field of apostolate, which makes consultation and reading much easier.

The result is that Volume One now deals with the departure from China proper, temporary stays in Hong Kong and Macao (as well as the later ongoing missions there) and the temporary stay in the Philippines. Volume Two begins the story of Taiwan, which continues in the following two volumes. Volume Five deals with missions in southeast Asia.

Church, state, and history : the last Jesuit higher education institute in China / Jiang Youguo 姜有國 and Tian Weishuai

"This book explores the history of the Tianjin Institute of Higher Studies in Industry and Commerce, the last Jesuit higher education institution in China. Founded by French Jesuit missionaries in 1921, the institute played a crucial role in the educational and cultural exchange between China and France during a transformative period. The authors detail the institute's foundation, development under various political regimes, and its integration into the Chinese national education system after 1949, highlighting its influence on Chinese modernization and the unique cross-cultural collaboration it fostered. Through meticulous research, Youguo Jiang, S.J., and Weishuai Tian provide an insightful narrative of the institute's challenges and achievements. The book examines the broader context of Catholic and Protestant missionary activities in China, offering a comprehensive look at the interplay between religion, education, and politics. This work is essential for scholars of Chinese history, religious studies, and educational development, as well as those interested in the legacy of Jesuit education in China." Summary:

The cultural accommodation and linguistic activities of the Jesuits in China in the 16th–18th centuries / Fangfeng Don and Yang Yang

Published in Religions 2025, 16(4), 470

Abstract:
From the 16th to the 18th century, Jesuit missionaries in China pioneered inter-cultural exchange by integrating cultural accommodation with groundbreaking linguistic research. By adopting Confucian scholarly practices and systematically studying the Chinese language, they developed innovative approaches to Chinese phonetics, grammar, lexicography, rhetoric, and teaching. Their linguistic achievements not only facilitated missionary work but also contributed to early modern sinology and cross-cultural communications. This paper examines the Jesuits’ dual strategy of cultural accommodation and linguistic research, demonstrating how their deep engagement with Chinese intellectual traditions enabled them to study the Chinese language successfully, to communicate with local elites smoothly, and to disseminate Christianity effectively. Through the combination of local philological traditions with Western linguistic techniques, they introduced new perspectives on the Chinese language, influencing both Western sinology and China’s linguistic development. Their translations of religious, scientific, and philosophical texts also played a key role in shaping Sino-Western intellectual exchanges. By analyzing the Jesuits’ linguistic activities and the strategies they employed in the process, this study highlights the Jesuits’ impact on Chinese linguistic scholarship, the transmission of Christianity, and their role in cross-cultural communication. Their work also exemplifies how language, culture, and religion can effectively collaborate in cross-cultural encounters, shaping historical narratives and fostering dialogue between civilizations.
