Note | Orazio Grassi and a 1623 Treatise on the sphere : astronomy and physico-mathematics at the Collegio Romano in the early seventeenth century / by Kraig Bartel. Thesis (M.A., History of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of Oklahoma 2016). Includes bibliographical references. "The University of Oklahoma History of Science Collections recently acquired a 1623 manuscript which has been attributed to the Jesuit mathematician Orazio Grassi. The first section of the manuscript, entitled “Tractatus de sphaera” or “Treatise on the sphere,” is a fair copy of student notes on spherical astronomy. As such, it is a significant new primary source for understanding the teaching of astronomy at the Collegio Romano in the seventeenth century. Through a physical examination of the manuscript, critical discussion of its subject matter and comparison with other Jesuit writings, this thesis argues that Orazio Grassi was teaching physico-mathematics in his astronomy course at the Jesuit Roman College in 1623 as part of a concerted effort started by Christopher Clavius and institutionalized in Jesuit education. Jesuit educators such as Orazio Grassi were actively introducing novel observations and contemporary discoveries to astronomy students in the early seventeenth century."--Abstract

JapSin II, 27 The cover bears a label with the title. There is a Latin inscription that reads: “Introductio ad Astro | nomiam | a p. Jac. Rho, S.J.”The verso of the title page mentions the collection (Xiyang xinfa lishu) and the section to which the text belongs: 西洋新法曆書,法原部,日躔, the chief compiler (Xu Guangqi): 明禮部尚書兼翰林院學士協理詹事府事加俸一級徐光啟督修, the author and reviser (Giacomo Rho and Adam Schall): 修政曆法極西耶穌會士羅雅谷撰,湯若望訂, and the proofreaders (Wu Mingzhu, Zhou Shichang, Chen Yingdeng, Zhu Guangxian, Chen Yujie, and Xu Huan): 門人鄔明著,周士昌,陳應登,朱光顯,陳于階,徐瑍受法. There is a table of contents (three folios). The whole book consists of forty-two folios. Each half folio has nine columns, with twenty-two characters in the first column and twenty-one in the rest of the paragraph. Annotations are given in smaller type and in double lines. The title of the book and the number of the folio are given in the middle of each folio. While consciously beholden to Copernicus and Galileo, Rho did not accept the heliocentric system, preferring to consider the assertions of these masters unproved. Possibly his hesitation was due to tactical consideration - not to disturb either the ideas held by the Chinese or the official doctrine of the Church. Cf. Pfister, p. 191, no. 14 (Théorie du soleil); Couplet, p. 23 (Theoria Solis). |

Dias’ work was devoted to descriptive cosmology rather than mathematical astronomy. [A Chinese Christian convert who collated this text was Xu Leshan 許樂善 (ca. 1544-1625/26; jinshi 1571, baptised as John in 1610).] Dias' Tianwen lüe 天問略 (Epitome of Questions on the Heavens, 1615) is best known for its appendix, in which Galileo Galilei’s (1564-1642) invention of the telescope and the new observations he made with it were reported; the details of the surface of the Moon, the phases of Venus, the four satellites of Jupiter, the objects of which Saturn’s rings are made, many stars in the Pleiades and the Milky Way. Information travelled fast from Europe to China: Galileo’s Siderius Nuncius had been published in 1610, and his observations confirmed by Jesuit astronomers of the Roman College the following year. The main body of the Tianwen lüe, however, was a description of Ptolomaic astronomy; Dias' preface pointed out that the universe described was the work of God." -- Cf. JapSin II, 45a The cover bears a label with the Chinese title in ink and a Latin inscription: “Praedictiones temporis | pluvium, ventorum | et eiusmodi.” A note in Latin reads: “Haec scriptio non est Pris Verbiest.” Another note by Louis Van Hée reads: “Patris Verbiest: Observatio meteorologiae. Rarus.”The introduction (in three and one-half folios), written by Verbiest and entitled: Tianwen shiyong zhi xiaoyan 天文實用之效驗 (The efficacy of the practical use of astronomy) is dated 1682 (Kangxi 21). There are nine columns in each half folio with twenty characters to each column. The title of the book is given in the middle of each folio with the number of the folio below the fish-tail. The whole book consists of twenty-two folios. Headings for each paragraph are given on the top margin.
Verbiest writes: “Here we try to give the results of the astronomical forecasting which the Imperial Observatory has already sent to His Majesty, from the eighth to the ninteenth year of the Kangxi reign [1669–1680], dividing it into eight sections per year, as the effective practice of astronomy and as a positive proof of the accuracy of our calendars . . .” 今將自康熙八年至十九年每歲八節,預推天象之效驗,開列於後,以為天文實用之效,及預測推曆法所為可準之實據焉 . . . (Yutui jiyan, folio 1). It is clear that this book is the result of astronomical experiments made in a period of eleven years.
