Atlante della Cina di Michele Ruggieri 羅明堅, S.J. (1543-1607)

"Born in Spinazzola in Puglia (Italy), Ruggieri entered the Society of Jesus at the age of twenty-nine after holding official posts under Philip II, King of Naples. He was assigned to the Eastern missions and arrived in Goa on September 13, 1578. (Matteo Ricci was a fellow passenger). In July 1579 he arrived in Macau to implement the revolutionary missiological policy inaugurated by Alessandro Valignano 範禮安, S.J. (1538-1606). In 1583, after establishing friendly contacts with Chinese officials in Guangdong Province he was granted permission to build a church and residence at Zhaoqing 肇慶. In September of 1583 Ruggieri and Ricci took up residence there, establishing the first post-medieval Christian mission in China.
Like Ricci and other pioneers of the Jesuit China mission, Ruggieri was accomplished in many areas, and cartographic and linguistic skills were deemed particularly important. On Ruggieri's map (c. 1609) can be seen detailed information on terrain, cities, and waterways. Learning the Chinese language was not restricted to local dialects but also to learning guanhua 官話, the official language known in Western countries as Mandarin. Dictionaries and lexicons were created and the first semi-standard romanizations for Chinese characters were created (based on Portuguese letter values: see the Portuguese-Chinese Dictionary in this display). Published letters describing Chinese civilization sent by Ricci, Ruggieri, and others to Europe were highly popular and avidly studied by historians and philosophers."--Display placard text.

Appendices: Latin text of the Elogium--Analysis of the transcription system : The Transcription of Mandarin in the Account Book / Ad Dudink.

Publishers note--This book reconstructs the life of a Jesuit missionary in a small inland residence in China (Ch'ang-shu, Chiang-nan Province), primarily but not exclusively on the basis of the evidence of a newly (re)discovered private Account Book covering the period from October 1674 to April/May 1676. This 'pocket' note book mainly represents the missionary's private expenses, and, to a much lesser extent, the revenues he received. As such it is an exceptional document in the missionary documentation. Absolutely unique is the part concerning his personal 'spiritual' exercises, his successes as well as failings in that field. After a lengthy introduction, in which both the life of the author and the complex composition of the Account Book are reconstructed, the text is presented, in a bilingual Latin - English edition. In seven chapters the contents are further described and analysed from various angles: the general topographical setting; the author's ten journeys through the region in 1674-1676; the social contacts referred to; the various aspects of priestly and pastoral life; the means of propagation, written as well as pictorial; the material culture of the mission; the financial structure of the whole undertaking, including the patterns of expenditure revealed. All the evidence available in this Account Book is combined with other contemporary information, mainly from unpublished sources, including a large number of quotations from the lost Couplet - Rougemont correspondence that has survived in Estrix's Elogium F. de Rougemont (1690), the text of which is also published here for the first time. Thus the Account Book assumes its place as an exceptional private document with a major relevance for the reconstruction of missionary life in China.

Contents: Introduction - 1. Biography of F. de Rougemont, S.J. - 2. The manuscript of the Account Book - 3. General appreciation of the Account Book c.s. as an historical source - 4. Appendix: conspectus litterarum/de Rougemonts correspondence - Text and translation – Commentaries
1. The topographical setting of the Account Book: The Christian topography of de Rougemont's 'parish' - 2. De Rougemonts movements inside his mission - 3. Social life: De Rougemont in Chines Society - 4. Priestly life - 5. The means of propagation and propaganda - 6. The material culture in the mission - 7. The finances of the mission.

Part 1 – Servant and Scholar. Part 2 – The Emperor's "Grandfather"
Total Running time: 104 minutes.
Languages (dubbing and subtitles): English and Mandarin Chinese.

"In 1618, Fr. Johann Adam Schall von Bell, a brilliant young Jesuit scholar from Germany, set out for the mysterious and little-known land of China. Following in the footsteps of his Jesuit missionary predecessor Fr. Matteo Ricci, Schall mastered the Chinese language and diligently adapted his lifestyle to Chinese culture. When Schall's talents in astronomy and mathematics attracted the attention of the Ming Dynasty Emperor, he was appointed head of the Bureau of Astronomy and given the monumental task of renovating the Chinese calendar.

Schall retained his position even after the Ming Dynasty fell and was replaced by the Manchu Qing Empire. He became the close friend and spiritual guide of the young Qing Emperor who raised Schall to the highest official level ever attained by a westerner in Chinese history-Mandarin of the First Class. When the Emperor met with an early death, Schall was influential in choosing his successor - the great Kangxi Emperor - who came to be China's longest reigning and most respected ruler. It was the Kangxi Emperor that issued the edict giving the Catholic Church legal status in China.

This two-part TV docudrama follows Schall throughout his long and dramatic life in China, his accomplishments, his struggles with his fellow missionaries and his own conscience, his persecution and narrow escape from a cruel death, and his official burial presided over by the Emperor himself."--case insert.
