This article is primarily concerned with the question of what kind of text Gezhi aolüe (Outline of the mystery [revealed through] natural science), a unique ms. copy (1820) from the Zikawei Library in Shanghai and published for the first time in 1996, precisely is. Gezhi aolüe appears to be older than 1820 (dating to before 1723), and to be a summary of one of the "Manila incunabula" (as Van der Loon called them), viz. Gewu qiongli bianlan 格物窮理便覽 (Handy compendium for investigating things and extending knowledge, 1607) composed by the Dominican friar Tomas Mayor for the Minnan-speaking Chinese in Manila, which in turn is based on Luis de Granada's Introduccion del Simbolo de la Fe (1583). The article further concentrates on the biblical chronology (Vulgata) embedded in a scheme of six "world ages" (from Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Salomo, and Zerubbabel to Christ) that Gewu qiongli bianlan presents (a chronology not found in the Introduccion). Due to the absence, at that time, of a Chinese translation of the Bible and especially of the Old Testament, Gezhi aolüe (as well as the ms. Renlei yuanliu 人類源流 (The origin of mankind) that seems to be based on Mayor's text too) that was not compiled by Western missionaries reproduces for quite a number of less well-known names in the genealogy from Adam to Christ the Minnan or Hokkien 'transliterations' used in Gewu qiongli bianlan. The article concludes with two appendices: 1) a survey of which biblical chronology Chinese Christian texts of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries use: the Vulgata chronology (the world was created some 4000 years before Christ), or the Septuagint chronology (the world was created some 5200 years before Christ); and 2) a reproduction of the genealogy of Christ (in Chinese and, of course, not using Minnan transliterations) that Carlo di Orazio da Castorano, a Franciscan missionary in Shandong, had printed in 1704 (the only known copy is preserved in the Vatican Library, see frontispiece and attached illustration of this issue of EASTM).

Catalogue of Chinese documents in the "Propaganda Fide" historical archives (1622-1830) /  Ad Dudink ; Zhao Hongtao, Emanuele Raini (scientific editors) ; with an Introductory Essay by Eugenio Menegon.

Included bibliographical references (p.86-98) and index.

Propaganda Fide Historical Archives = (SOCP) Archivio Storico di Propaganda Fide del Dicastero per l‘Evangelizzazione.

This first catalogue of Chinese documents in the Archives of Propaganda Fide offers not only an annotated list of its invaluable resources, but also reproduces the full text of a few rare or unique Chinese Christian texts. The Catalogue (Dudink; eds. Zhao, Raini) is preceded by an essay (Menegon) that gives a full explanation of the entire structure and contents of the Archives pertaining to the China missions, and sketches the activity of Propaganda Fide missionaries in China up to the early 19th century: “the Chinese documents catalogued here open a window on the daily life of the Chinese Christian communities and their pastors, and the reaction of Chinese society to Catholic activities. Read together with the letters and reports sent from Asia in European languages to accompany them, they offer a corrective to a Rome-centered vision of the missions” (Menegon).

"Confession in early modern Europe has been the subject of several studies. But what happened to the confessional practice when it moved to other cultures? This is the major research question of the present book as applied to late Ming and early Qing China. The origin of this research can be traced back to the Handbook of Christianity in China: Volume One (635-1800) (Leiden 2000) compiled by researchers of the K.U. Leuven, in collaboration with an international team of circa twenty scholars. As a reference work, the Handbook comprehensively presents many different aspects of Christianity in China, including sciences, arts and crafts. But there was one major absentee: ritual, which is often considered essential for understanding China. A first step in filling the gap was the organisation of an international workshop on 'Chinese and Christian Rituality in Late Imperial China' (Leuven, June 2004). The present volume includes the revised contributions by Eugenio Menegon and Erik Zürcher and a reworked version of an article by Liam Brockey as well as the edition of the primary source he used for his article, a confessional manual composed by José Monteiro S.J. (1646-1720). These articles portray from different angles one of the sacramental rituals, viz. that of confession"--Introd.

Publishers note--This book reconstructs the life of a Jesuit missionary in a small inland residence in China (Ch'ang-shu, Chiang-nan Province), primarily but not exclusively on the basis of the evidence of a newly (re)discovered private Account Book covering the period from October 1674 to April/May 1676. This 'pocket' note book mainly represents the missionary's private expenses, and, to a much lesser extent, the revenues he received. As such it is an exceptional document in the missionary documentation. Absolutely unique is the part concerning his personal 'spiritual' exercises, his successes as well as failings in that field. After a lengthy introduction, in which both the life of the author and the complex composition of the Account Book are reconstructed, the text is presented, in a bilingual Latin - English edition. In seven chapters the contents are further described and analysed from various angles: the general topographical setting; the author's ten journeys through the region in 1674-1676; the social contacts referred to; the various aspects of priestly and pastoral life; the means of propagation, written as well as pictorial; the material culture of the mission; the financial structure of the whole undertaking, including the patterns of expenditure revealed. All the evidence available in this Account Book is combined with other contemporary information, mainly from unpublished sources, including a large number of quotations from the lost Couplet - Rougemont correspondence that has survived in Estrix's Elogium F. de Rougemont (1690), the text of which is also published here for the first time. Thus the Account Book assumes its place as an exceptional private document with a major relevance for the reconstruction of missionary life in China.

Contents: Introduction - 1. Biography of F. de Rougemont, S.J. - 2. The manuscript of the Account Book - 3. General appreciation of the Account Book c.s. as an historical source - 4. Appendix: conspectus litterarum/de Rougemonts correspondence - Text and translation – Commentaries
1. The topographical setting of the Account Book: The Christian topography of de Rougemont's 'parish' - 2. De Rougemonts movements inside his mission - 3. Social life: De Rougemont in Chines Society - 4. Priestly life - 5. The means of propagation and propaganda - 6. The material culture in the mission - 7. The finances of the mission.

Reprint.
Preface also in English.
"The present collection in 34 volumes reproduces 84 titles ...." -- Preface.
Table of contents online in pdf at: Chugoku Shoten.

"Sequel to the Chinese Christian Texts from the Zikawei Library is edited by Nicolas Standaert, Ad Dudink and Wang Renfang. In line with earlier collections, it reproduces not yet known or not yet published texts which were originally co-produced by Chinese and Europeans. These prints and manuscripts revive the early contacts between China and Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth century.

The present collection of 34 volumes includes 84 titles from the Zikawei (Xujiahui) Library in Shanghai. Two of these titles cover already 14 volumes: Zhang Xingyao’s 張星曜 Tianjiao mingbian 天教明辨 and Louis de Poirot’s translation of the Old (incomplete) and New Testament. The remaining 82 titles cover a wide range of subjects such as Bible texts, Christian explanations of the Book of Changes, apologetics, history of religion and science, and include unique or rather rare titles, for example Jingyi tang zhi 敬一堂誌, Renlei yuanliu 人類源流, Chongxiu jingyun 崇修精蘊, Lü Liben 呂立本 Yijing benzhi 易經本旨, Shang Huqing 尚祜卿 Bu Ru wengao 補儒文告, Lu Xiyan 陸希言 Yishuo 億說, and Chen Xun 陳薰 Xingxue xingmi 性學醒迷.

The purpose of this publication of precious works is twofold: to protect the ancient documents against damage and decay as well as to make these unique documents open to researchers in order to encourage new research. In this way, the editors hope to contribute to the protection and conservation of this cultural heritage."--Publishers note.

Yesuhui Luoma dang'anguan Ming-Qing Tianzhujiao wenxian 耶穌會羅馬檔案館明清天主教文獻 / edited by Nicolas Standaert [鐘鳴旦] [and] Adrian Dudink [杜鼎克].
At head of title: Yesuhui Luoma dang'anguan 耶穌會羅馬檔案館.
In Chinese, with foreword and list of titles also in English.
"This collection contains a selection of hitherto unpublished texts that belong to Japonica-Sinica section (Jap.Sin. I-IV) of the Roman Archives of the Society of Jesus."

Introduction
"The entire [JapSin] section contains ca. 580 titles including duplicates, reprints, and other editions. Most of these titles (ca. 520) are in Chinese. Except for some twenty titles, all date back to the late Ming or early Qing. The first books were already sent to Rome in the early 17th century and gradually the library expanded. Albert Chan, S.J., has compiled a catalogue with an often extensive description of all the texts: Chinese Books and Documents in the Jesuit Archives in Rome: a Descriptive Catalogue (Japonica-Sinica I-IV), New York, M. E. Sharpe, 2002. A list of all the texts is also included in Ad Dudink's article "The Japonica-Sinica Collections I-IV in the Roman Archives of the Society of Jesus: an Overview" in Monumenta Serica (2002), which analyzes the chronological layers of these collections and introduces the texts that are unique or rather rare.

The present publication reproduces some 100 texts from these four collections. In selecting these texts the editors adopted the following criteria...texts written before ca. 1820...texts not reprinted in any modern collection....unique or rare texts. They include catechetical texts by missionaries, Christian texts by converts, and rules for sodalities. Vols. 9-11 reproduce Jap.Sin. I (38/42), 39-42 (except 40/1), a unique set of some thirty manuscript documents written by Chinese converts concerning aspects of the Chinese Rites during the last two decades of the 17th century. Other texts are not unique but often difficult to access, as in Kouduo richao (vol. 7) ...

The first three volumes cover mainly catechetical writings and some texts that introduce methods of prayer amd meditation. They include some of the earliest introductions of the Christian doctrine, such as Michele Ruggieri's original version (1584) of Tianzhu shilu (no.1), Alfonso Vagnone's explanation of Doctrina Christiana or Tianzhu jiaoyao (1615)(no.3), or the illustrated guide to the prayer of the Rosary by Joao da Rocha (Song nianzhu guicheng)(no.6). Vols. 3-4 contain two important writings by Giulio Aleni on the Life of Christ (nos.14, 15). Vol. 5 is organized around a broad category of Christian ritual, including a perpetual liturgical calendar by Philippe Couplet (no. 19) and explanations of the funeral ritual by different authors. Philosophy and science in the renaissance sense of the word are included in the 6th vol.; introductions to Aristotelian psychology (no. 26), the art of drawing (no.27), or the study of sleep and dreams (nos. 28, 29). Vol. 7 is entirely covered by Kouduo richao, an extensive selected record of the missionaries' preaching in Fujian during a period of ten years (1630-1640). Vols. 8-11 are texts by Chinese Christians. Vol. 8-9 include various writings by them on explicitly Christian religious themes. The role of Chinese converts in the Chinese Rites controversy having so far been largely underestimated, vol. 10-11 present texts in which they express themselves on this topic. These may challenge the vision of the controversy as being by and large a European problem. Appended to vol. 11 is Buglio's translation of parts of the Rituale Romanum. The 12th and final volume contains texts on various topics such as natural philosophy, medicine, the life of the saints, biographies of famous missionaries in China, and the rules of sodalities."--Preface.
