Shengjing yuelu 聖經約錄
By an anonymous author.
One juan. Chinese bamboo paper in one volume, fourteen folios. No date or place of publication.

The cover bears a Latin inscription: "Succincta explicatio or. domin. [orationis dominicae ], Ave Maria, signi crucis, opera 7 spirit. Sacramentorum. S.J. deest nomen auctoris (compendium minimum operis Japa Sin I, 57)." Cf. Wieger’s catalogue (WH), which attributes this book to Alfonso Vagnone, gives: "Compendium minimum operis n. 57."

At the back of the title page there is a note by P. D’Elia: "Dottrina Cristiana del Ricci posteriore al 1605. La descrizione di questa opera si ha in Tacchi Venturi: Opere storiche del P. Matteo Ricci, S.J. 1913, II, 266. La copia ivi descritta sta all’ archivio della propaganda a Roma. La presente copia deve essere posteriore a quella di Roma: a) il 3o comandamento è come quello di adesso. b) 5 unzioni (invece di 4) sono indicate per l’Estrema unzione. c) la parola "Messa" è quella chi si usa ora. 4.9.34 P. D’Elia S.J."

The characters are in the regular style of writing Chinese (kaishu 楷書). Each half folio contains seven columns with eleven characters in each column. Annotations are in double lines within the same column and each line contains nine characters.
Pfister makes no mention of this book. From the title of the book one may easily make the mistake of thinking that it is a synopsis of the Scriptures. In reality, it is a small book of prayers, rightly translated by Courant as "Petit recueil de prières" (7449).
Judging from the Catholic terminology used in this book one can quite safely conclude that it is an old translation. A great number of the terms are transliterations. Thus, "Church" is translated 厄格勒斯亞 (Ecclesia) and "Sacraments" 撒格勒孟多 (Sacramentum). The seven Sacraments are rendered in the following way: baptism 拔第斯摩 (baptismum), confirmation 共斐兒瑪藏 (confirmatio), communion 共蒙仰 (communio), confession 白尼登輯亞 (paenitentia), extreme unction 厄斯得肋麻翁藏 (extrema unctio) and matrimony 瑪地利摩紐 (matrimonium). On folio 14v, there is the following inscription:

右耶穌會友所譯教要累經竄改至數次 . 乃得與本經原文相合. 方敢付梓. 以故與初譯本互異云. 中有即用本經語者. 乃用分註以譯其義.
(The above is a translation of the essential Christian teaching. After repeated correction it finally agrees with the original. We can now print it with assurance, and the translation is different from that of the first edition. Some of the terms are rendered by transliteration and [to make them clear] we have added some annotations to explain the meaning of each of them).

There are also two seals on this folio with the emblems of the Society of Jesus, one of them round and the other square. Since there is no way to identify the author we are inclined to follow D’Elia’s opinion (see above) and class it with the writings of Ricci. A confirmation of this attribution can be found in letters of Ricci himself: "At that time permission had already arrived from the inquisitors for us to print the necessary books for our faithful. What Father Matteo [Ricci] first did was to publish a new version of the prayers and other things necessary for the new Christians, which he did with the help of the other priests. In addition to these prayers other items of the Christian teaching were included with brief annotations especially on the seven Sacraments" (TV 1:456). He goes on to say that translations of this kind had already been made, but because of lack of understanding of Catholic terms, the Chinese translators had never succeeded in making a good translation. Every year new corrections had to be made.
In a letter to Father Fabio de Fabij, S.I. in Rome (9 May 1605), Ricci mentions his intention of sending a copy of the "Dottrina christiana" to his friend and tells him that this new version has been made with great care and that it has been necessary to make up many ecclesiastical terms that were new to the Chinese. The following are the subjects mentioned in the letter: the Pater Noster, the Ave Maria, the Decalogue, the Creed, the Sign of the cross, the Corporal and Spiritual works of mercy, the eight Beatitudes, the seven capital sins, the seven virtues, the five senses of the body, the three faculties of the soul, the three theological virtues and the seven sacraments. Brief explanations are given in small characters whenever there is need for. (TV 2:266, letter 30).

Tianzhu shengjiao shilu 天主聖教實錄.
By Luo Mingjian 羅明堅 (Michele Ruggieri).
One juan, one volume. Chinese bamboo paper. No place or date of publication. Ming edition.

The cover bears the title in Chinese and a Latin inscription: “Compendium legis divinae a P. Michael Ruggiero, S.J.” There is a note by D’Elia: “Questa è la 2a edizione del Catechismo del Ruggieri (NN. 189, 190) uscita coll’ imprimatur del Furtado verso 1640, dopo censure dei PP. Emmanuel Dias, Gaspard Ferreira e Giovanni Monteiro. D’Elia. 23.9.1937.”
The frontispiece bears the emblem of the Society of Jesus. The verso of this folio gives the title (see above).
The 1584 introduction (ff. 1r–2r) of Ruggieri (the signature now reads: 遠西羅明堅) is immediately followed by the inscription (f. 2r): 耶穌會後學羅明堅述 (Narrated by Luo Mingjian, of the Society of Jesus), 同會陽瑪諾,費奇規,孟儒望重訂 (Newly revised by Yang Manuo [Manuel Dias Jr.], Fei Qigui [Gaspar Ferreira] and Meng Ruwang [João Monteiro] of the same Society), 值會傅汎際准 (With the permission of Fu Fanji [Francisco Furtado]). Then follows the table of contents (one folio).

The main text consists of thirty-seven folios. The first folio gives again the title in Chinese and the name of the author. Each half folio contains nine columns, with nineteen characters in each column. The upper middle of each folio gives the title of the book and the number of each folio is given under the title.
This edition of the Tianzhu shilu was published, when Francisco Furtado was Vice Provincial of the mission in China (1635–1641 and 1646–1647) and revised by the three Jesuits whose names we have recorded above. It was then nearly sixty years since the Jesuits had come to China. By this time Ruggieri’s book was no longer in circulation (cf. Jap-Sin I, 189). It was only natural that the new edition should be adapted to the needs of the time. The designation “a monk of India” for the author of the book is no longer to be seen in this edition. Instead the term yuanxi 遠西 (Extreme West) and Yesuhui houxue 耶穌會後學 (member of the Society of Jesus) is used. Since the publication of Matteo Ricci’s Chinese World Map, the Chinese had begun to know something about Europe, and Ricci called himself a European in his book Jiaoyou lun 交友論 (cf. Jap-Sin I, 49 and 53.2). The word seng 僧 (Buddhist monk), which appeared in the first edition of the Tianzhu shilu, was then replaced by the word jian 堅 (the last character of Ruggieri’s Chinese name, i.e., I or me). The last phrase of the first chapter of the original edition, which reads: 一位之天主, was changed to 一尊之天主, in order to avoid misunderstanding on the doctrine of the Holy Trinity (三位一禮). Likewise in the first line of chapter two 一位天主, the word 位 was dropped and so afterwards wherever the same phrase occurred. Also, terms used in the first edition were changed considerably. Thus: 天人 (angel) was changed into 天神, 魂靈 (soul) became 靈魂, 咽咈諾 (hell) became 地獄; 布革多略 (purgatory), however, was given the free translation: 古今善人煉罪者之居 (the habitation where the just, ancient or recent, make satisfaction for their sins). Furthermore, the original edition did not try to give much explanation of the doctrine of the Holy Trinity; the new edition develops the doctrine more fully. Even the word si 寺 (monastery) was felt to be too Buddhist and it was changed to Tianzhutang 天主堂 (a Catholic church).

This new edition is divided into sixteen chapters, as was the original edition. The divisions, however, are not quite the same; e.g. the seventh chapter of the original edition (解釋魂歸四處) is placed in the eighth chapter and the wording reads: 解釋魂歸五所. The seventh chapter of the new edition adds a new item, namely: 天主聖性章 (chapter on the Divine nature of God). In short, the new edition makes so many changes that the original book is greatly improved. The book has the qualities of a modern catechism.

Cf.

By Su Ruwang 蘇如望 (João Soeiro, 1566–1607).
One juan. Chinese bamboo paper in one volume. No date or place of publication.

The cover bears the title and a Latin inscription: “Compendium | Doctrinae christianae | Liber sinicus editus a Patre | Joanne Soerius Soctis Jesu.”
Folio 1 bears the title Tianzhu shengjiao Su Ruhan xiansheng huowen yueyan 天主聖教蘇如漢先生或問約言. The censors were members of the Society of Jesus and the editor a member of the Catholic Church, Stephen Weng Yuanyue 翁元爚 (zi 修齡). As we see from the above, this book is also known as Tianzhujiao huowen and João Soeiro’s Chinese name is also written 如漢 instead of 如望.
Each half folio contains eight columns, with twenty characters in each column. The upper center of each folio bears the title Shengjiao yueyan 聖教約言 with the number of the folio below. The text consists of thirteen folios, at the end of which there is the following line: 天主教或問約 (end of the Tianzhujiao huowen).
This book was composed for non-Christians, who wished to learn about the Church and to embrace the faith.

"The present collection in 34 volumes reproduces 84 titles ...." -- Preface.
Table of contents online in pdf at: Chugoku Shoten.

"Sequel to the Chinese Christian Texts from the Zikawei Library is edited by Nicolas Standaert, Ad Dudink and Wang Renfang. In line with earlier collections, it reproduces not yet known or not yet published texts which were originally co-produced by Chinese and Europeans. These prints and manuscripts revive the early contacts between China and Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth century.

The present collection of 34 volumes includes 84 titles from the Zikawei (Xujiahui) Library in Shanghai. Two of these titles cover already 14 volumes: Zhang Xingyao’s 張星曜 Tianjiao mingbian 天教明辨 and Louis de Poirot’s translation of the Old (incomplete) and New Testament. The remaining 82 titles cover a wide range of subjects such as Bible texts, Christian explanations of the Book of Changes, apologetics, history of religion and science, and include unique or rather rare titles, for example Jingyi tang zhi 敬一堂誌, Renlei yuanliu 人類源流, Chongxiu jingyun 崇修精蘊, Lü Liben 呂立本 Yijing benzhi 易經本旨, Shang Huqing 尚祜卿 Bu Ru wengao 補儒文告, Lu Xiyan 陸希言 Yishuo 億說, and Chen Xun 陳薰 Xingxue xingmi 性學醒迷.

The purpose of this publication of precious works is twofold: to protect the ancient documents against damage and decay as well as to make these unique documents open to researchers in order to encourage new research. In this way, the editors hope to contribute to the protection and conservation of this cultural heritage."--Publishers note.
