2nd work Zhuozhong zhi (about 1618), by Liu Ruoyu, eunuch of the late Ming period; notes on events and proceedings in the imperial palace, in particular under the last four emperors. One of the very few works written by a eunuch, a highly relevant source for the events and life in the inner palace (written between 1628-1644). Cf. W. De Christiana expeditione apud Sinas is the earliest full account of the Jesuit China Mission. Written by Nicolas Trigault 金尼閣 (1577-1628), it is an amplification (with some misreadings and omissions) of the Italian manuscript left by Matteo Ricci after his death in 1610, which was supplemented by the Jesuits Ferreira, Longobardi, and Cattaneo. It was immediately popular and translated into German, Spanish, and Italian, and was later partially translated (by Louis Gallagher) into English. A modern Chinese translation also exists.

De Christiana expeditione apud Sinas presents the history of the mission from Xavier’s time until Matteo Ricci, the experience in Japan, and much information concerning the Chinese nation, government, philosophy, and history.

Guochao xianzhenglu 國朝獻徵錄 " .... most voluminous and important collection of biographies of eminent people living between the beginning of the [Ming] dynasty and the early Wanli period. Kuo-ch'üeh [Guoque] 國榷 (about 1653) ... by Tan Qian 談遷著 (1594-January 1658), a Ming loyalist, from Haining 海寧, Zhejiang ....(see entry for Huang Zongxi's date reference). "Probably the most important work of the annalistic pattern on the whole Ming period from 1328 to 1645. The last twenty-five years are dealt with more extensively, taking up more than one-sixth of the whole work. The first draft was stolen from the author by robbers in 1647; the new text was completed about 1635 and transmitted in a number of more or less varying and incomplete manuscript copies. A new edition [this ed.] based on the collation of several different manuscript-copies has been prepared by Zhang Zongxiang 張宗祥, divided into 104 juan and four introductory juan ... and published in six volumes in 1958 ...". "Guoque 國榷 (Evaluation of the work of our dynasty), Tan Qian 談遷著 (1594-1658). Useful for basic chronology. Also in some cases it has a clearer account than in the Mingshi, especially of Ming relations with the Jianzhou 建州 Jurchen." Cf. Wilkinson, Chinese history, a manual, p. 881.

"Ku-jang tsa-lu 古穰雜錄 (1460’s) ... Notes on events and eminent officials of the early Ming period, mainly of the [Xuande, Chengtong, Qingtai and Tianshun] periods when the author was a high ranking official at Peking. The work is known also under the title [Xinye zuanwen] 莘野纂聞 .... and accordingly Mingshi give 2 juan ...but only texts in 1 juan are known..."– Cf. W. Huang Ming jingshi wenbian 皇明經世文編 (Ming documents on statecraft) ... " ... the most important topically arranged collection of Ming memorials (and other writings). The 3,145 entries (which are quoted in full) were selected from hundreds of bieji and other sources written by 430 senior officials during the course of the Ming, both in the central government and in the provinces. Many of the sources quoted have been lost, hence the value of this collection. The intention of the chief compilers (childhood friends from the Yangzi delta and Ming loyalists) was to concentrate their readers' minds at a time of impending disaster. The emphasis therefore is on practical matters of government and administrations, especially national security. The arrangement is by author and by subject matter in a chronological frame. Zhengtong linrong lu 正統臨戎錄. (middle 15th century)...Yang Ming 楊銘 (a Mongol with the original name Haming 哈銘)...Accounts of the captive Emperor Yingzong, whom Yang Ming together with Yuan Bin accompanied. The narrative is written in the colloquial language and is more detailed than that of Yuan Bin. A refacimento of this narrative in the literary language is the Zhengtong beishou shiji 正統北狩事蹟. Beizheng shiji 北征事蹟 (1465)...Accounts of the campaign and events during the captivity of Emperor Yingzong, whom Yuan Bin as an officer of the Imperial Guard accompanied. General encyclopaedia with many maps and tables including, to a large part, materials on the Ming period. It is divided into four sections. Juan 1-15, 經義, deal with the Confucian classics; juan 16-28, 象緯歷算, cover cosmology, astronomy, and the calendar; juan 29-67, 地理, contain a detailed geography of the Ming empire including also subjects such as border defence and foreign peoples inside and outside the Chinese border; juan 68-125, 人道, deal with the physical and moral qualities of men, with emperors and famous personalities in Chinese history, with political organisation and with all kinds of public activities classified according to the scope of operation of the Six Ministries. The last two juan are more of an appendix concerning strange phenomena, 易象類編, and directions for the writing of poetry, 詩學多識. The work was compiled between 1562 and 1577 and published after the author’s death with some additions, and with biographical materials on the author by Wan Shanglie 萬尚烈. Prefaces by the author, and by Wang Shanglie, 1613. A later edition has an additional preface by Yue Yuansheng 岳元聲, 1623. Prohibited. –- Cf. "...Compared to the official dynastic history of the Ming dynasty, the Mingshi 明史, the Zuiweilu presents much more information on the Southern Ming 南明 (1644-1661) princes and their efforts to reestablish the dynasty. The treatises are very detailed and include three chapters on matters not covered by the Mingshi, namely the field system (Tutian zhi 土田志), corvée and taxes (Gongfu zhi 貢賦志), and military colonies (Tuntian zhi 屯田志). The biographies are not centered on persons' lives but on certain events they were involved in.

The Zuiweilu, as critical towards the Manchu rulers of the Qing dynasty 清 (1644-1911), was banned from circulation. One exemplar survived in the library of Master Liu's Jiayetang Studio 劉氏嘉業堂. In 1936 the Shangwu Yinshuguan Press 商務印書館 printed this version. It is also included in the third series of the series Sibu congkan 四部叢刊"--Cf. ChinaKnowledge.de
