Many of the sources quoted have been lost, hence the value of this collection. The intention of the chief compilers (childhood friends from the Yangzi delta and Ming loyalists) was to concentrate their readers' minds at a time of impending disaster. The emphasis therefore is on practical matters of government and administrations, especially national security. The arrangement is by author and by subject matter in a chronological frame.
