“Cefu yuangui 册府元龜 (Magical mirror in the palace library, or, alternatively, Outstanding models from the storehouse of literature). Compiled 1013. The original title provides a good indication both of the intention and the contents: Lidai junchen shiji 歷代君臣事跡 (Records of the lives and deeds of outstanding officials of successive dynasties). The Cefu yuangui was compiled by a committee headed by Wang Qinruo 王欽若 (962-1025) and others……arranged into 31 branches (bu 部), subdivided into a total of 1,102 categories (men 門). The coverage is from the earliest times to the end of the Five Dynasties (960). Sources are mainly the 17 standard histories or from works since lost, such as Shiliu guo chunqiu 十六國春秋 (from which there are 480 excerpts). Sources are not always indicated. Particularly important for Nanbeichao, Tang, and Five Dynasties history. The second category under the section on dynastic histories (Guoshi 國史, juan 554) contains instances of historians refusing to bend under political pressure. The mushrooming of reference (leishu) and daily-use encyclopedias (riyong leishu) in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries drew on earlier book collections, which Chinese literati previously had valued as texts while preparing for civil examinations or for collecting source materials needed by officials to carry out their activities. Since 1000, these traditional collections transmitted a specific epistemological approach for investigating things, events, and phenomena. Beginning in the mid-thirteenth century under Mongol rule, new types of leishu developed, some of which, owing to the steady expansion of printing as well as literacy and the corresponding proliferation of a bookish print culture, reached a much wider readership than ever before. On the one hand, these new types of leishu covered a wider range of knowledge. On the other hand, they represented a form of classicism that approached things/events/phenomena textually, i.e., in a lexicographic and etymological way. Using the encyclopedic form, compilers increasingly applied the ideals for " investigating things and extending knowledge " (gewu zhizhi) beyond the classical corpus. This textual approach to natural studies and practical knowledge culminated in the creation of textual repositories simulating " textual museums. "

General encyclopaedia with many maps and tables including, to a large part, materials on the Ming period. It is divided into four sections. Juan 1-15, 經義, deal with the Confucian classics; juan 16-28, 象緯歷算, cover cosmology, astronomy, and the calendar; juan 29-67, 地理, contain a detailed geography of the Ming empire including also subjects such as border defence and foreign peoples inside and outside the Chinese border; juan 68-125, 人道, deal with the physical and moral qualities of men, with emperors and famous personalities in Chinese history, with political organisation and with all kinds of public activities classified according to the scope of operation of the Six Ministries. The last two juan are more of an appendix concerning strange phenomena, 易象類編, and directions for the writing of poetry, 詩學多識. The work was compiled between 1562 and 1577 and published after the author’s death with some additions, and with biographical materials on the author by Wan Shanglie 萬尚烈. Prefaces by the author, and by Wang Shanglie, 1613. A later edition has an additional preface by Yue Yuansheng 岳元聲, 1623. Prohibited. –- Cf.
