JapSin II, 47 The cover bears a Latin inscription: “Futior explicatio et | probatio mysteriorum | fidei ad suscipiendum | baptismum | a p. Ferdin. Verbiest | S.J.”At the head of the book there is a preface by Han Lin 韓霖. This is in fact the preface written by Han for the Shengjiao xinzheng (cf. Jap-Sin I, 192). It is put here by mistake (cf. Courant 9676–III: Autre édition, renferment en plus une préface par Han Lin Yu kong [雨公] de Ho tong [河東], 1647). Then follows a preface by Verbiest himself (two and one-half folios). Folio 3 of this preface contains a passage written by Lodovico Buglio, which actually is a passage from Buglio’s preface for juan 11 of the Chaoxingxue yao 超性學要 (Summa Theologiae) and is placed here by mistake (cf. Jap-Sin II, 7, ce 11, preface of Buglio, 1676). The table of contents consists of four and one-half folios. Folio 1 gives the title of the book and the name of the author: 極西耶穌會士南懷仁述. The main text consists of sixty-seven folios with headings on the top margin of each folio. There are nine columns to each half folio with twenty characters to each column. The title of the book is given in the middle of each folio with the number of the folio marked below the fish-tail. According to Van Hée (quoted by Pfister, p. 352, no. 1) this book was incorporated in the Siku quanshu 四庫全書 for its simple, pure and logical style. There is no trace, however, of this book in the General Catalogue 四庫全書總目提要. Van Hée may have been mistaken. The text was translated into Manchu, but this version was denounced in an imperial edict of 1805 (Wylie, p.177). Pfister, referring to Wylie p. 142, says: “Il a été aussi traduit et imprimé en coréen vers 1864” (p. 353 no. 1). Our edition of Wylie’s Notes does not give this. It was also translated into the Shanghai dialect under the title Fangyan jiaoyao xulun 方言教要序論. A French translation was published by Zikawei. Cf. Hsü 1949, pp. 162–163; Courant 6972–6977 (6972–76 have the title 天主教要序論, while 6977 gives only 教要序論). Fang Hao gives a number of early editions of this book: 1677, 1799, 1848, 1867 (JWC 2:178). This book was reprinted in Zikawei (ed. 4a 1914, one volume, 106 pp.). Other editions were printed in Hsien-hsien (1932, one volume, ninety-six pages), in Hong Kong (1905, one volume, 120 pp.), in Yenchowfu, Shandong (ed. 3a. 1931, one volume, 116 pp.) and in Peiping (1931, one volume, fifty-one pages). |

Li Sixuan 李嗣玄 (zi 又玄), four folios. There follows a general table of contents for juan A (one folio), a list of books quoted (one folio) and directions to the readers (two folios).
Li Sixuan in his preface tells very briefly what this book is about: a collection of religious events and edifying stories of the Catholic Church. The preface written by Li Jiugong himself recalls how in 1635 (Chongzhen 8), when he was studying on the seacoast, he was far from his spiritual directors and good friends. He took out his books and went through them one by one. Then a thought came as a light to him that good books help to increase one’s spiritual knowledge in the way that the rain helps to develop the good tender blade. Just as the rain falls without seeking a preferable place, so good books instruct without seeking for a preferable student. Inspired by this thought, he began to take notes on what he read and after months of work he finally offered his book to the public with the hope that it might be a good help to his readers. |

JapSin I, 156 The cover bears a label in ink and below it is written: 贛州堂夏相公 (Xia, xianggong of the Ganzhou mission). The Latin inscription reads: “Pao Chi Pi uam pi | Apologia contra Apologias in Pi uam.” There is an inscription in Francesco Filippucci’s own handwriting: “O Hia S.C. o fez e nos mandou no 1687” (Xia, xianggong made it and sent it to us in 1687).Shortly after Xu Guangqi published his book Piwang in refutation of Buddhism (cf. Jap-Sin I, 139, 139a, 159), a monk named Puren of Yushan in Zhejiang wrote a book entitled Piwang pilüeshuo 闢妄闢略說 in defence of his religion. The treatise by the xianggong Xia was intended as a refutation of Puren’s writing. The manuscript is not listed among the Catholic publications of the time. Filippucci’s note indicates that the treatise was written two year earlier than the Pilüeshuo tiaobo 闢略說條駁 by Hong Ji 洪濟 and Zhang Xingyao 張星曜, which was published in 1689 (cf. Jap-Sin I, 132; 132a). JapSin I, 157 The cover bears the title in ink and a Portuguese inscription: “Obra do Kiam Nicolao. Manda da Fo xin (the work of Kiam Nicolao. Sent from Fo xin).”There is a preface by Jiang You himself, written at the Jianhe studio 劍合齊 in Yanjin 延津 (Henan), dated Shunzhi dingyou 丁酉 (1657). According to the preface, the author was a native of the district of Sanyuan 三原 (Shaanxi). Since the Latin inscription refers to him as Nicolao he must have been a Catholic. At the end of the preface he tells us that he was illiterate in his young days. As a consequence, he was not able to write in defense of the [Christian] truth. All he could do was to compile sayings and teachings of ancient sages in disproof of unorthodox teachings. Furthermore, he hoped that by his work he might inspire others to God’s service. He did not pretend to be learned nor do his writings show much originality. In fact, the manuscript contains a number of errors in the writing of characters. Perhaps, he was a catechist in the Catholic mission who had spent his free time compiling this work. There does not seem to be much order in his quotations. There is a preface (題天釋明辯; the character 辯 should be 辨) by Zhang Geng 張賡 and a table of content (two folios). The main text consists of eighty-nine folios. On top of folio 1 the title of the book is given and below the author’s name. There are nine columns in each half folio with nineteen characters to the column. Yang Tingyun realized that, though in Buddhist teachings there are similarities to those of the Catholic Church, in fact their concepts are quite different. In his early days, Yang had been a devout Buddhist and was well versed in Buddhism; hence his refutation is always to the point. Jap-Sin I, 124 The cover bears the title and a Latin inscription: “Compendiosa demons | tratio christianae | Religionis. Auct. P. Al. Buglio, S.J.”The booklet consists of five and one-half folios. Each half folio has nine columns with twenty characters per column. The upper middle of each folio bears the title of the book with the number of the folio marked below the fish-tail. At the end of the book the author’s name is given.
This is a simple catechism, very similar to the other two books by the same author, namely the Shengjiao jianyao 聖教簡要 (Jap-Sin I, 87) and the Zhujiao yaoji 主教要紀 (Jap-Sin I, 88). The author concludes his booklet with the following remark: “Catholicism was introduced into China more than ninety years ago and there have been accusations by local government officials against the Christians. Great has been the number of men who sincerely sought the truth and by following a virtuous life obtained perfection. There have been others who at first led superstitious lives but were then converted to the truth. Again, there have been those who had been avaricious, lascivious, proud and lazy, but completely transformed their manner of living as soon as they had been Christians and became men of great virtue. All these are good proofs, and the facts are seen and heard by all. Nevertheless, there are ignorant people, who, though they became Christians, because of lack of understanding attained what appears superficial. Furthermore, they vacillated and failed to persevere to the end. Note | JapSin I, 145 Zhengshi lüeshuo 拯世略說. By Zhu Zongyuan 朱宗元. One juan. Chinese bamboo paper in one volume. No date or place of publication. The cover bears the title in Chinese with a Latin inscription: “De vera et falsa religione, a licencia | to christo Chu çum yuen.”There is a preface by the author (four folios) and a table of contents (two folios). Folio 1 bears the title and the author’s name. There are nine columns in each half folio with twenty-one characters in each column. The upper middle of each folio bears the title with the number of the folio below the fish tail. There are sixty-six folios in the whole book. The book explains the teaching of the Catholic Church. At the same time it is an apology, seeking to show how Catholicism differs from other religions. For the author of this book, see below (Jap-Sin I, 146). Cf.
