China at the center : Ricci and Verbiest world maps / Natasha Reichle, editor ; with essays by M. Antoni J. Ucerler, Theodore N. Foss, and Mark Stephen Mir.
Accompanies the "China at the Center" exhibition at the AAM and associated exhibit and symposium organized by the Ricci Institute at the University of San Francisco.
Includes bibliographical references.

Foreword / Jay Xu -- Preface. Mapping the marvelous / Natasha Reichle -- Missionaries, mandarins, and maps: reimagining the known world / M. Antoni J. Ucerler, SJ -- Ricci’s world map: the 1602 Kunyu wanguo quantu / Theodore N. Foss -- All under heaven: visions of far lands in the Verbiest world map of 1674 / Mark Stephen Mir.

"Global exploration in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries led to new interactions between Europe and Asia. Jesuit priests were instrumental in spreading knowledge of the world to China and information about China to Europe. China at the Center focuses on two masterpieces of seventeenth-century map-making that illustrate this exchange of information (and misinformation). The first map is the Kunyu wanguo quantu, or Map of the Ten Thousand Countries of the Earth, also known as the 1602 Ricci map, after Matteo Ricci, the Jesuit priest who helped create it. The second is the 1674 Verbiest world map, which was also made by a Jesuit priest, Ferdinand Verbiest, for the Chinese court. These two maps are among the earliest, rarest, and largest woodblock-printed maps to survive from the period. They will be examined through the lens of the development of cartography in China and through the biographies of the fascinating men who were instrumental in their production. Maps are political objects, and the inclusion of elaborate and extensive notations on both these maps illustrate the fascinating relationships between the Jesuits and the Chinese courts. These maps represent the meeting of two worldviews, and the information they contain provided Europeans with greater knowledge of China and the Chinese with new ideas about geography, astronomy, and the natural sciences. This book accompanies the exhibition China at the Center, at the Asian Art Museum March 4-May 8, 2016, which brings together the 1602 Ricci map from the James Ford Bell Trust in Minneapolis and the 1674 Verbiest map from the Library of Congress in Washington D.C"-- Provided by publisher.

"Emperors' Treasures features artworks from the renowned National Palace Museum, Taipei. It encompasses paintings, calligraphy, bronzes, ceramics, lacquer ware, jades, and textiles exemplifying the finest craftsmanship and imperial taste. The Chinese art book book explores the identities of eight Chinese rulers--seven emperors and one empress--who reigned from the early 12th through early 20th centuries. They are portrayed in a story line that highlights artworks of their eras, from the dignified Song to the coarse yet subtle Yuan, and from the brilliant Ming until the final, dazzling Qing period. Emperors' Treasures examines each ruler's distinct contribution to the arts and how each developed his or her aesthetic and connoisseurship"-- Provided by publisher.

"In Korea, life milestones have traditionally been celebrated with festivals and feasts. Such celebrations helped to define and honor an individual's identity. Based on a 2009 exhibition at the National Museum of Korea, the exhibition at the Asian Art Museum that this book documents incorporates new findings and researches. Co-organized by the Asian and the NMK, the show--which opens in San Francisco in October 2013--presents rare and exquisite objects drawn from some ten museums in Korea. Highlights include a ten-panel folding screen of Celebrations on the Crown Prince's Birth from 1874, a portrait of Emperor Gojong from 1897, a Royal Procession to the Royal Tomb at Hwaseong from 1795, and kings' thrones and palanquins. The book documents Korea's taste for splendor and grandeur. It explores the meaning and obligations of kingship, the elite culture of the court and the upper class during the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), and the complex roles of women in organizing and presenting elaborate celebrations, in the grandest of styles."--Publisher description.

"Pearls on a String presents the arts of historical Islamic cultures by focusing on specific people and relationships among cultural tastemakers, especially painters, calligraphers, poets, and their patrons. Through a series of chapters, the book spotlights certain historical moments from across the Islamic world. Each chapter pivots around patrons and their social networks. These independent sections allow different voices and perspectives to emerge, enabling the reader to see that Islamic societies are not monolithic but made up of a tapestry of individuals with distinct and varying views. Pearls on a String pays particular attention to individuals from different sectors of society, giving voice to anonymous artists and translators, merchants, and women of the harem. Islamic historical sources reinforce the book's themes of writing in Islamic societies, artistic patronage, biographical traditions, and human"--Publisher.

Yoga: The Art of Transformation is the companion book to the first ever exhibition of the visual history of yoga, a discipline that is thousands of years old and practiced today by millions of people. Like the Smithsonian's Sackler Gallery exhibit, this large pictorial uses a wealth of materials from ancient stone and bronze temple sculptures to early 20th century photographs to illuminate yoga's central tenets and its still partly un-delineated traditions. Explore the discipline's goals of spiritual enlightenment, worldly power, and health and well-being through the beauty and profundity of Indian art.
