"This book is built upon a reflection on the various intertextual and interdiscursive relationships between certain Asian traditions (such as those of China, Japan and Persia) and the West. However, it also deals with other significant aspects of translation as a dynamic intersection between cultures and texts, tackling important translational issues, such as the translation of the Chinese self vis à vis Western modernity; the translation of the Bible and of Christian terms into Japanese and Chinese; the translation of metaphors from Persian poetry; and the relation between Chinese and Western translation studies."

Abstract:
This volume offers an overview on a variety of intertextual, interdiscursive and cross-cultural practices in the field of translation between Asian and European languages. From a twelth-century Persian poet to a Chinese female novelist of the last century, from the ‘cultural translation’ of Christian texts carried out in pre-modern Japan and modern China, up to the making of the modern Chinese theory of translation based on its encounter with Western literature, the articles collected provide many valuable insights, ensuring a deeper comprehension of the evolving relations between cultures and of the tools adopted by both Asian and European translators on each particular occasion.

Abstract:

Instead of focusing on one specific country at one point in time, only a broader perspective across Asia spanning over one or two hundred years can reveal cross-cultural connections that are often overlooked. The Bible, devotional texts, and representations of the cosmos from the West were adapted to the cultural and social canvas of East Asia through a long and complex process of textual transformations involving a multiplicity of actors. In this transformative process, the question of textual authority was central, and as the encounter unfolded, authority became progressively shared among the foreign missionaries, the local Christian clergy, and communities.

"A version of material from chapters 3 and 4 was presented in a paper titled “A Comparison between the Morrison Bible and the Chinese Union Version according to Yan Fu's translation principles of ‘Faithfulness, Accuracy, and Elegance’” at the 2012 Society of Biblical Literature Annual Meeting in Chicago, and a paper titled “The Roman Connection – The Latin Vulgate Influence on the Chinese Bible” at the 2015 Society of Biblical Literature Annual Meeting in Atlanta."
