[Feingold-Jesuit science and the republic of letters.pdf] OCLC note: Founded in 1540, the Society of Jesus was viewed for centuries as an impediment to the development of modern science. The Jesuit educational system was deemed conservative and antithetical to creative thought, while the Order and its members were blamed by Galileo, Descartes, and their disciples for virtually every proceeding against the new science. No wonder a consensus emerged that little reason existed for historians to take Jesuit science seriously.Only during the past two decades have scholars begun to question this received view of the Jesuit role in the Scientific Revolution, and this book contributes significantly to that reassessment. Focusing on the institutional setting of Jesuit science, the contributors take a new and broader look at the overall intellectual environment of the Collegio Romano and other Jesuit colleges to see how Jesuit scholars taught and worked, to examine the context of the Jesuit response to the new philosophies, and to chart the Jesuits' scientific contributions. Their conclusions indicate that Jesuit practitioners were indeed instrumental in elevating the status of mathematics and in stressing the importance of experimental science; yet, at the same time, the Jesuits were members of a religious order with a clearly defined apostolic mission. Understanding both the contributions of Jesuit practitioners and the constraints under which they worked helps us to gain a clearer and more complete perspective on the emergence of the scientific worldview |

EUCHINA note: "...There is (of course) not a chapter on the Jesuits and China, but two chapters have ‘China’ in their title: This chapter discusses Jesuit strategies in mission art and architecture in the early modern world through two eighteenth-century case studies, one in China and the other in Brazil. The first is an episode in the Jesuit artistic campaign at the Qing court in Beijing when Jesuit artists worked closely with court artists and the Chinese emperor Qianlong to create the Xiyanglou (European-style buildings) at the imperial gardens at Yuanming Yuan. The second is the Jesuits’ introduction of Chinese style decor into church interiors in colonial Brazil as a symbol of Christian victory over paganism. These two episodes will also complicate our idea of Jesuit exceptionalism since non-Christians, Franciscans, and other orders were involved in these activities, sometimes as much as the Jesuits. On the other hand, chapter 34 (The Jesuit Rites Controversy) deals for the greatest part with China (in addition to India: Malabar rites). Other chapters dealing with China are: chapter 6 (Financing Jesuit missions) that gives special attention to female donors and the finances of Jesuit missions in China; chapter 24 (Music in global Jesuit missions, 1540-1773) contains a section “Music in the missions of China and Japan” and chapter 32 (Anti-Jesuitism in a global perspective) a section “Juan de Palafox from Mexican quarrels to Chinese rites”. In chapter 33 (The Jesuits and the Enlightenment) China plays a prominent role."--(Ad Dudink, June 2, 2019. Note | Saint Cicero and the Jesuits : the influence of the liberal arts on the adoption of moral probabalism / Robert Aleksander Maryks. Print version publishers: Aldershot, Hampshire, England ; Burlington, VT : Ashgate ; Rome : Institutum Historicum Societatis Iesu ©2008. Based on the author's thesis (doctoral--Fordham University, 2006), originally presented under the title: From Medieval tutiorism to modern probabilism. Includes bibliographical references (pages 148-161) and index. 1. Early Jesuit ministries -- 2. "What has Athens to do with Jerusalem?" : Jesuit ethics before the revolution of probabilism -- 3. "Christian Virtue and Excellence in Ciceroniam Eloquence" : the Jesuit literary renaissance and adoption of probabilism -- 4. The genealogy of Jesuit probabilism -- 5. Probabilism as the spiritual Sodom : Jansenist attack against Jesuit ethics.
"In this study, Dr. Maryks offers a detailed analysis of early modern Jesuit confessional manuals to explore the order's shifting attitudes to confession and conscience. Drawing on his census of Jesuit penitential literature published between 1554 and 1650, he traces in these works a subtly shifting theology influenced by both theology and classical humanism. In particular, the roles of Tutiorism' (whereby an individual follows the law rather than the instinct of their own conscience) and 'Probabilism' (which conversely gives priority to the individual's conscience) are examined."
