"From the Ming and Qing periods there are several collections of imperial edicts or memorials by officials which contain material related to Christianity ... Missionaries and converts themselves collected memorials and edicts related to Christianity in order to show how much the Emperor, officials and other literati favoured the missionaries and respected their doctrine....There were three major contemporary collections of this type...the second is a compilation, Xichao chongzheng ji, attributed to Giulio Aleni and published in 1639....the third....is Xichao ding’an, which by 1684 comprised 3 juan. The publication started in the early 1670’s and had the purpose of defending the ‘restored’ Western astronomy – in April 1669 Ferdinand Verbiest had replaced Yang Guangxian as head of the Astronomical Bureau..."
