Each meditation usually has the following structure: general presentation of the theme (tizhi 題旨); preparatory prayer (zhuwen 祝文, xiaoyin 小引); composition of the place (dingxiang 定像); short prayer (jiandao 簡禱); "points" (si 思); colloquy (zhuyan 祝言); reflections (fuxing 覄省).
