“Al Miller charges through the Cross line for 5 yards and a first down.” —Sub Turri, 1959

For his outstanding running, amassing a total of 156 yards in this game, Miller ’59 was awarded the Edward J. O’Melia Memorial Trophy, named for a Holy Cross graduate who was killed in action during World War II. Beginning in 1945, the trophy was awarded each year to the game’s outstanding player. Among the Boston College graduates who won the trophy were Ernie Stautner ’50 (1948), Dick Lucas ’56 (1955), Jack Concannon ’64 (1962), Mike Esposito ’75 (1973), and Doug Flutie ’85 (1981 and 1984), the only BC player to win twice.

The 1958 game was the first to take place in the newly constructed Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, with a capacity of 26,000. But three NBC television cameras broadcast the game to an estimated 8 million people.
