“Joe Johnson smashes over from the one for the winning touchdown in the last few seconds of play. John McCauley (42) and Jim Kane (20) applaud.” —Sub Turri, 1952

Only 10 seconds remained when Johnson crossed the goal line to give 20-point underdog BC the win. Johnson ’54, who went on to play for the Green Bay Packers and the Boston Patriots, made his game-winning touchdown on the muddy surface of Braves Field. In the days before artificial playing surfaces, rain almost always resulted in a muddy field. The Holy Cross game was traditionally BC’s last game of the season, which sometimes meant it was played in wintry conditions. The November 30, 1963 game, at Fitton Field, was played in a sleeting rain and 30-mile per hour winds. The 1971 game, scheduled for Fitton Field on November 27, had to be relocated to Foxboro Stadium when two feet of snow fell on Worcester.
