17世紀，中西文化曾有過一次短暫但又廣泛的交流，主要媒介是以耶穌會為主的西方來華傳教士。比利時人南懷仁不但是位傳教士，更是位科學家、工程師、外交家，對天主教在中國的成長有相當的貢獻。
