Note | A Flow of Christian Images from the Shanghai Jesuits to the Paris Foreign Missions in Japan: Imitation, Alteration, and Returning to the Roots / Nanyan Guo. Extract from: Journal of Jesuit Studies 10 (2023): 605–639 "Jesuits in Modern Far East....special issue of the Journal of Jesuit Studies explores the “new” Jesuit mission to China, established in the 1840s.."--Steven Pieragastini. Abstract The Jesuit Adolphe Vasseur created more than 160 woodblock prints at the orphanage of T’ou-se-we in Shanghai, China, combining Western images of biblical stories with traditional Chinese styles and symbols, aiming to help familiarize the Chinese people with Christian concepts. Vasseur’s images were adopted and transformed through lithographic publications and woodblock prints by the Paris Foreign Missions (MEP) in Japan from the 1860s to the 1870s under Fr. Marc Marie de Rotz (1840–1914). Focusing on ten woodblock prints, often referred to as the “De Rotz Prints,” which were made based on Vasseur’s images and altered by adding Japanese symbols, this paper will show how Vasseur’s images were modified from a Chinese to Japanese context, primarily by adapting to the situation of Japanese Christians, who were emerging from more than two centuries of persecution and underground worship. This article is part of the special issue of the Journal of Jesuit Studies, “Jesuits in Modern Far East,” guest edited by Steven Pieragastini. Angelo Zottoli S.J., a Jesuit missionary who has received relatively little attention by modern scholars, but who deserves a special recognition for his theological and philosophical ideas. More generally, the book aims to shed light on the importance of cosmogony in the cross-cultural and interdisciplinary environment of Xujiahui, the area in modern Shanghai where Zottoli flourished. It shows how through Zottoli's teaching and sermons he was able to reimagine his own cosmogonic ideas, his personality, and his relationship with local Chinese converts. Among Zottoli's most famous students was Ma Xiangbo (1840-1939) and Zottoli played a crucial role in Ma's intellectual formation. A wider familiarity with Zottoli's works is not only interesting in and of itself, but also paves the way to future studies on the complex and multifaceted relationship between European missionaries and Chinese students in Shanghai during the nineteenth century. Antonio De Caro is a Postdoctoral Scientific Researcher within the Centre for Early Medieval Studies at Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic. He earned his PhD degree at Hong Kong Baptist University under the supervision of Prof. Lo Ping Cheung. After his doctoral studies he has been awarded with the prestigious Young Scholar Award by the EACP (European Association for Chinese Philosophy).

Note | Pedagogy, display, and sympathy at the French Jesuit orphanage workshops of Tushanwan in early-twentieth century Shanghai / by William Hsingyo Ma. Dissertation (Ph.D., History of Art) University of California, Berkeley, 2016. Includes bibliographical references (p. 104-118) "This dissertation closely examines the art and craft workshops at the French-Jesuit-run orphanage of Tushanwan in the first decades of the twentieth-century. Founded in the 1860s, the workshops taught Chinese orphaned boys a wide range of vocational skills from painting to shoemaking in preparation for their entry into adulthood in a rapidly modernizing China. Using different art objects and projects created at the major workshops as my primary subjects of investigation, the dissertation analyzes the transmission, translation, and reinvention of modern Euro-American aesthetic ideologies and techniques at Tushanwan and their receptions. In the process I question the nature and motivation of commercial workshops like Tushanwan beyond the monetary and reframe its practices and operations in terms of the religious, institutional, cultural, and historical legacies of the Jesuits in China. I also expand the global scope of popular late nineteenth- century European aesthetic movements such as the Arts and Crafts by accounting for the reinterpretation of those ideologies within the local context. Through the works and practices from the workshops, I describe a collage of interactions between China and the world united by a sense of common spiritual identity that supposedly transcended national and state boundaries, but instead reified and maintained the heterogeneity of identities."--Abstract.

Abstract (English) T'ou-sè-wèi Orphanage Art Workshop was established in Xujiahui Area of Shanghai by Jesuits coming to China at the end of Qing Dynasty, a by-product of the lvation " activities of Catholicism in China. It was intended to serve the spreading Catholic doctrines in southern China and even in the whole country. During its tory of nearly 100 years, it set up a series of workshops in printing, woodworking, hardware and drawing, produced lots of religious oblations to meet the need of Catholicism promulgation and fostered many talents in art and craft. However, due to many reasons, almost none of the crafts and artworks produced T'ou-se-we exist today, and documents about them are rare and scattered. So the restoration of such an artwork is definitely very meaningful for the study of the spreading and influence of Christian art. The first part does a comprehensive study of the beginning, development and appearance of the T' ou-se-we Orphanage on the basis of all the materials that could acquired, trying to set up the history framework of the Art Workshop and restore its nal situation of production, management and training. The second part discusses T' ou-se-we art works by some typical materials about churches, paintings and sculptures.
