1952: Field days

On Wednesday, June 11, commencement took place on Alumni Field, the present site of the Dustbowl. It was one of the last commencements to take place on the Middle Campus. In 1949, Boston College had purchased the defunct Upper Reservoir that became the Lower Campus. While the reservoir would not be completely filled in until 1969 (mostly with rubble from the construction of Route 128), in 1957 the football field bleachers were taken apart by a small army of workers and volunteer alumni and staff, and carried down to the Lower Campus where they were set up on the first section of the reservoir filled in, launching Alumni Stadium.
