1938: Pomp and ceremony

On Wednesday, June 8—75 years after BC was founded in the South End with a total enrollment of 22—the 478 members of the “diamond jubilee year graduating class of 1938” received their degrees. This milestone may explain the elaborate Gothic stage. While it was not unusual for the majority of honorary degrees in those years to be awarded to clerics, 1938 was a signal year, with 10 of the 12 honorary degrees being awarded to priests and bishops.
