My interest in oncology patients arose from my experiences as a staff nurse and as an advanced practice nurse in various in-patient and outpatient settings, and also from serving as a home care hospice nurse for persons with cancer and their family members. My research and current work evolved from my oncology and hospice experiences. I have studied the short- and long-term experiences of people with cancer, the family's experiences, and the roles that advanced practice nurses can take to mitigate the patients? symptoms and to support the family. One of my goals is to explore ways to gather clinical data regarding quality of life issues and the management of symptoms in order to maximize effective use of information systems for research purposes.
