When I arrived in the United Stated as a refugee from the Vietnam War, the first Americans that I had encountered were social workers. They had a profound impact on my decision to become a social worker and a professor of social work and to study acculturation and mental health of the Vietnamese American community.
I am also interested in learning about the wellbeing of other immigrant and minority groups. For example, I have been the principal investigator in research projects regarding the health care and integration of Russian immigrants, elderly Chinese Americans, and Latino-Americans. I hope that my contributions to the field of social work will broaden and strengthen the appreciation of diversity in our local and global communities.
