My research focuses on victimization and violence, particularly intimate-partner violence, mental health responses to traumatic experiences, and rape and sexual assault. I became interested in the effects of violence from my practice as a psychiatric nurse. Many of our patients had violent experiences in their backgrounds and needed help managing the mental health consequences.
My current research project looks at attitudes and beliefs about reporting of date rape among black college women. Many victims do not seek help. I'd love to increase our understanding of factors that encourage or hinder them from seeking assistance so that we can develop and implement effective programs to identify and help victims and potential victims.
