Boston College team photograph, 1922

In the early part of the century, 11 players comprised a college team and played both offense and defense, sometimes playing the entire game without rest. Padding was light and usually limited to shoulder and thigh protection. Leather helmets were not required until 1939. Injuries were common, and facilities were spartan. The Gasson Hall rotunda was this team’s locker room. Identifying players during a game was often difficult, as jersey numbers were not required on both front and back until 1937.
