On November 10, during a conversation in the Heights Room largely devoted to the Catholic intellectual tradition, the noted philosopher Charles Taylor was asked a “personal” question by his interviewer, Boston College theologian Rev. Robert Imbelli: Why do you speak of yourself as “a believer again”?
Charles Taylor is the author of A Secular Age (2007) and the recipient (also in 2007) of the $1.5 million Templeton Prize for Progress toward Research or Discoveries about Spiritual Realities. He was given the prize, according to the John Templeton Foundation, for his insistence “on the inclusion of spiritual dimensions in discussions of public policy, history, linguistics, literature, and every other facet of humanities and the social sciences.” Taylor’s visit was sponsored by the Church in the 21st Century Center, the philosophy department, and the Alumni Association.
