A brief examination of the use of exotic animals to illustrate later versions of Ricci’s Mappamondo (such as those done by Verbiest and other Chinese cartographers and illustrators). Dr. Menegon traces the illustration of a rhinoceros from Albrecht Dürer to those of Konrad Gessner (1516-1565), to variants used by Verbiest on the Kunyu tushuo 坤輿圖說 (1674). Added keywords: Renaissance beasts, bijiaoshou 鼻角獸, xi/xiniu 犀牛, illustrated maps, animals in cartography.
