『1941年底太平洋戰爭爆發後，中國正式向日、德、義軸心國家宣戰，成為同盟國一員，並於1942年春編組中國遠征軍，入緬與英、美盟軍並肩作戰。但因入緬時間過晚，已失去先機，加上戰場遠在國外，軍隊指揮系統、後勤補給均出現協調、聯繫不足等問題，第一次緬戰竟以失利告終。其後，遠征軍大部退回國境，在滇西集結整訓，遂與雲南地方政治產生密切互動；並在美軍協助下改換美式裝備、接受換裝訓練，徐圖反攻之機。本書聚集臺灣學界軍事史研究之中、青年學者，在傳統以戰事為主的敘述脈絡之外，扣緊中國遠征軍指揮系統、反攻作戰計畫、後勤編裝及與地方政治互動等主題進行析論，期能以新角度重新詮釋中國遠征軍歷史.』
