Note: Gao and Yang " ... left Beijing in 1751 for Paris and remained in France until 1765. During that time they studied theology, humanities, Latin, French, and Western science and were important informants about Confucianism to the Physiocrats. After ther return to China, they became intermediaries between the French Jesuits in Beijing and Henri L. J.-B. Bertin, who was Secretary of State in France (1762-1780)..." Cf.
