Description | 39 j. in 6 ce ; n.d. |
Note | JapSin I, 17.1 Sishu huowen 四書或問. By Zhu Xi 朱熹 (1130–1200). Thirty-nine juan, six ce (ce 1–6). Morun zhai 墨潤齊 edition; bamboo paper. The title page of ce 1 gives the original edition (Bailu dong), the title and the place of publication: 白鹿洞原本 | 朱子四書或問 | 墨潤齋藏板.We are told that when Zhu Xi finished the Sishu jizhu (cf. Jap-Sin I, 10) he realized that many of the commentators of the Four Books did not always agree in the interpretation of different passages. He therefore wrote the Sishu huowen in the style of questions and answers to show why he preferred one interpretation to another. Each of the Four Books was finished at a different time and they do not carry the same weight. Zhu Xi spent much time, for instance, on the Daxue and went through minute corrections of it. Unlike the Sishu jizhu, the Sishu huowen was an unfinished work, in the sense that Zhu Xi never had the time to revise it. Hence in the nianpu 年譜 (biography arranged according to chronological order) of Zhu Xi it is said that he never showed the book to others. If publishers managed to lay hand on a manuscript which they published, Zhu never hesitated to recover the printing blocks through the district magistrate (cf. SKTY 1:722–723). Cf. TTSK, pp. 141–142. Description | 6 v. ; 26 x 15 cm. |
Note | Note: The Sishu jizhu 四書集註 is among the most important commentaries on the Four Books. It has remained in print for more than 700 years, from the Wenzhou lu xue Jiguge 温州路學稽古閣 edition (Yuan Yanyou 元延祐5 [1318]) to the 2002 edition by the Ba Shu shushe 巴蜀书社. The first Western language (Latin) translation of three of the Four Books on Chinese philosophy, the Confucius Sinarum Philosophus (1687) was largely based on this text. A portion of the Jesuit archives collection Japonica-Sinica I is comprised of selected Chinese Classics and their commentaries as studied by the late Ming literati. It was through these works that the Jesuits learned the basic principles of Confucianism and the Neo-Confucianism of the Song scholar Zhu Xi. They are included here in order to illustrate the sources and thoughts of the Jesuits in their early, tentative steps in explaining and understanding traditional Chinese social/ethical/political systems, and their presentation to a Western audience.
Sishu jizhu 四書集註. The printing is fairly good and the book is in good condition. The format seems to be that of the late Ming period. The Latin inscription on the cover of the first ce reads: “Opera omnia Sinensis philosophi Mency, cum notis latinis marginalibus (seemingly, the one who wrote this thought that the book only contains the writings of Mencius).”The title page of the first ce is missing. There are nine columns in each half folio with seventeen characters to each column. The main text is given in single columns, while commentary is given in double columns. Pronunciations of the Chinese characters are given in romanization throughout the book. There are inscriptions in Latin on the following folios: 1. Daxue, f. 1v: incipimus 8 maii 1637 ad M.D.G. [ad majorem Dei gloriam]. In several parts of the book pronunciations are given according to the Portuguese romanization and the meaning of each character is also in Portuguese. The explanations, however, are given in Latin.
Brancati arrived in China in 1637. He first studied Chinese in Hangzhou 杭州 and left for Shanghai in the same year (JWC 2:55). Colombel gives the reason for his leaving for Shanghai: “le petit nombre des ouvriers ne permettait pas de longues études: il fut envoyé à Chang-Hai” (1:337). Pfister, however, makes no mention of Brancati’s study in Hangzhou.
Cf. Sapientia Sinica (Jap-Sin III, 3a), f. 2r “Ad lectorem,” last paragraph: “Notae appositae in margine sunt: f. p. § prima denotat folium textus iuxta ordine impressionis nan kim editae Authore chu hi, qui liber vulgo dicitur su xu çie chu.” This translation of the Daxue by Guo Najue 郭納爵 (Ignacio da Costa) and Yin Duoze 殷鐸澤 (Prospero Intorcetta) was revised by Nie Baiduo 聶伯多 (Pietro Canevari), He Dahua (Antonio de Gouvea), Pan Guoguang (Francesco Brancati), Bai Yingli 柏應理 (Philippe Couplet) and Lu Riman 魯日滿 (François de Rougemont). In folio 2r of the Zhongyong (Jap-Sin I, 10) there was an envelope which was addressed to Intorcetta: “Ao Pe Prospero [I]ntroxeta da Com. de Jesu.” It is very likely that da Costa and Intorcetta made their translation from this edition of the Sishu jizhu, which according to the “Ad lectorem” in Jap-Sin III, 3a was published in Nanjing. JapSin I, 15 The cover bears an inscription in Latin: “4 ll. [libri] classici, alia ed. (t. 15), 24 x 15.”The title page gives the author, title and place of publication: 蔡虛齊先生手著 | 四書蒙引 | 大業堂藏板. There is a preface by Lin Xiyuan 林希元, zi 次崖, dated 9 September 1527 (嘉靖丁亥中秋日). This is followed by Cai Qing’s own preface, dated 10 August 1504 (弘治甲子歲七月朔). At the beginning of the first juan the name of the reviser is given (Song Zhaoyue), followed by those of the proofreaders: Qin Zhixuan and Zhang Changgeng 門人秦之璇石友前張長庚白生甫較 (the word 前 must be a misprint of the word 甫). Song Zhaoyue came from Putian 莆田 (Fujian), but originally from Jieyang 揭陽 (Guangdong). Wu Xizhou of Anfu (Jiangxi) 安副伍希周, a jinshi of 1514, collated 較正 juan 2, revised 重訂 juan 3 and Lin Xiyuan collated juan 4. The Lunyu (juan 5–8) was collated by Lin Xiyuan. The Book of Mencius (juan 9–15, eight ce) had different collators and revisers: juan 9, 10 and 14 were collated by Wu Xizhou and juan 11–13 by Lin Xiyuan; juan 15 was revised by Song Zhaoyue and collated by Zhang Yunhong and Zhou Sili 門人章允鋐君碩甫周嗣鯉躍先甫校. There are ten columns in each half folio with twenty-seven characters to each column. For annotations there are only twenty-six characters to each column. The square printing types seem to indicate a late Ming edition. Juan 15a and b, however, are printed in the standard script of handwriting. Folio 1 of ce 16 is misplaced after folio 2. Cai Qing (1453–1508), was a native of Jinjiang 晉江 (Fujian). He obtained the jinshi degree in 1484. Later he became chancellor of the Directorate of Education 國子監祭酒 of Nanjing; cf. Mingshi 明史, juan 282 and Huang Zongxi 黃宗羲 (1610–1695), Mingru xue'an 明儒學案, juan 46. He is said to have spent the best part of his life on two books: the Sishu mengyin and the Yijing mengyin 易經蒙引. He was a follower of Zhu Xi’s teaching and was considered to be an orthodox Confucian scholar. In his preface Cai Qing tells us that he lost the first draft of this book. He then started to rewrite it by recalling from memory what he had written, adding at the same time some new annotations. Later he recovered the first manuscript. When he compared the two drafts he found that more than half of the material overlapped. However, some of the conclusions he had made differed one from the other. Since he had no time to make all the necessary corrections, he entitled his book (Sishu) mengyin chugao (四書) 蒙引初稿 (First draft of an introduction for beginners [to the Four Books]). Lin Xiyuan (ca. 1480–ca. 1560), a native of Tongan 同安 (Fujian) and a jinshi of 1517, also wrote a book about the Four Books in which he amended Zhu Xi’s commentary not in order to criticize, but to support his interpretation. The amended version he entitled Sishu cunyi 四書存疑 (DMB 1:921; NBC, p. 37). The Naikaku Bunko owns a Ming edition (preface of 1635) of the Sishu mengyin, revised by Song Zhaoyue (NBC, p. 36). Cf. Courant 2840–2843 (réédition non daté de Song Tchao-yo, surnom Eul-fou, de Kie-ling). The edition described in ch. 36 of the Siku tiyao dates from the Jiajing period.
