Publishers note--This volume intends to tackle two problems. The first is the historical framework of imperialism - until now widely applied by Western and Chinese scholars as an approach to the Christian evangelization movement in China. The theological aspect of the missionary action is seldom taken into account, nor is religion treated as an authentic human experience. In this volume two authors try to place the position of the Christian mission in its broader context. Scott Somers reflects on the changing image of the Japanese occupation in Taiwan, based on Protestant missionary sources; Koen De Ridder discusses the early diplomatic contacts between China and Belgium and the position of the Belgian missionaries. A second problem dealt with is that of the native Christians. While Jessie Lutz attempts to sketch a profile of the Chinese Protestant evangelizers, Jean-Paul Wiest focuses his attention on the Roman Catholics among the Chinese Hakka minority. Gary Tiedemann explains the material, spiritual and political incentives for conversion among the inhabitants of North China, paying special attention to the socio-political profile of the converts. In the contribution of Ann Heylen we return to Taiwan, where we are offered a better understanding of the Protestant contribution to the study of the Min language. Finally, Karel Steenbrink describes the changing religious affiliation of assimilated Chinese in Indonesia during the period 1900-1942.

"This book examines the theological worldview of the Taiping Rebellion (1850-64), a Chinese revolutionary movement whose leader, Hong Xiuquan (1814-64), claimed to be the second son of God and younger brother of Jesus. Despite the profound impact of Christian books on Hong's religious thinking, previous scholarship has neglected the localized form of Christianity that he and his closest followers created. Filling that gap in the existing literature, this book analyzes the localization of Christianity in the theology, ethics, and ritual practices of the Taipings. Carl S. Kilcourse not only reveals how Confucianism and popular religion acted as instruments of localization, but also suggests that several key aspects of the Taipings' localized religion were inspired by terms and themes from translated Christian texts. 自1980年代以來，我國學術界對近代來華傳教士的研究一直保持著相當的熱度。有關論著不斷發表、出版，表明傳教士問題的研究已成為一個頗有進展的學術領域。但人們也不難注意到，由於各種原因，從總體上來看，在這方面有深度的研究成果還為數不多，真正有突破性的專題研究則更為少見。因此，吳義雄的這部專門探討早期來華新教傳教士在華南沿海活動的著作的問世，無疑是傳教士研究領域中一項很值得珍視的新成果，對中國近代史學科中其他相關問題的研究也必將產生十分有益的推動。

本書的研究對像是19世紀前期新教傳教士在華南沿海的活動，即新教在華傳播開端階段的歷史。對這段歷史有關的各方面學術問題，國內學術界或是迄今未曾論及，或是只有局部、片段的了解；境外、國外的一些相關著作，或是資料不夠完備，或是由於信仰、觀念上的原因而在研究內容和方法上別有側重。我們可以看到，作者撰著本書的動力顯然來自解決這些問題的強烈願望。因此，本書的內容基本上涵蓋了這段歷史的各個方面。新教傳教士的宗教活動、他們在中外關係中的作用、他們從事的醫療和教育活動、傳教士與西學的傳播、傳教士與近代西方的中國學等方面的諸多問題，都在本書中得到了專門而深入的探討。作者既注重對具體史實的仔細考察，也注重從理論的層面討論一些比較重大的宏觀問題。例如，作者盡可能細緻地討論了英美各新教差會來華活動的起源，也從中外關係總體演變的角度探討了傳教中心由南往北轉移的歷史趨勢；既對“羅孝全索賠事件”這類國內學術界甚少提及的重要史實進行了集中研討，也從理論上說明西方各界對“開放的中國”的一致願望在傳教士言行中的體現。

我曾多次引用陳寅恪先生的名言：“一時代之學術，必有其新材料與新問題。取用此材料，以研求問題，則為此時代學術之新潮流。”這段名言精闢地揭示了新材料對於史學研究之意義。在一定意義上可以說，如果沒有新的材料，或者不能達到對原有材料成功地進行......
