"A banquet of faith : Jesuit missionaries, Chinese Catholic converts, and food practices in pre-modern China" / Antonio De Caro and Zhenxu Fan

Abstract:
Food-related encounters represented an important convivial and cross-cultural component in the Jesuit-led Catholic missions in China. By adopting a longue durée perspective from the end of the sixteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century, this article engages with both visual and textual sources related to Sino-European culinary encounters in the context of the Jesuit missions in China. These encounters offer valuable insights into the daily activities of Jesuit missionaries and their interlocutors, including Chinese literati, converts, and non-Christian individuals. This article examines several case studies, ranging from early modern accounts of Chinese food practices to nineteenth-century Catholic texts and primers for children published in Shanghai, providing examples of the relevance of food practices. It also considers the broader significance of culinary practices for Catholic missionaries from different orders in China.

6 Volumes

With the publication of the six volumes of China Jesuits in East Asia 1948-1968, the Taipei Ricci Institute is happy to make a major contribution to the history of the Society of Jesus in the Far East during the two decades which followed World War II. These six volumes provide indeed much detailed information on how the dispersal of all the numerous foreign Jesuits and Chinese Jesuit scholastics, who had been ordered to leave China following the takeover by the communist regime in mainland China in 1949, led to the creation of many Jesuit residences and various new and creative works, not only in Taiwan, which was then considered as being Free China, but also in the Philippines, Malaysia-Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

This publication is, primarily and principally, the fruit of the patient labour of Fr Fernando Mateos沈起元神父, SJ (1920-2015) who, during the two last decades of the last century, collected an incredible number of written documents and oral interviews before writing a first draft of the whole work in two thick volumes. From Matteos’ initial work, however, only the first volume Starting from Zero 1949-1957 was published in 1995, without an index and in poor English.

Then came the contribution of Fr Edmund Ryden雷敦龢神父, SJ who not only revised the whole work in his native language, but reorganized the chapters of the initial work into six thinner volumes, each of which concerns a specific area, a specific period of time and/or specific field of apostolate, which makes consultation and reading much easier.

The result is that Volume One now deals with the departure from China proper, temporary stays in Hong Kong and Macao (as well as the later ongoing missions there) and the temporary stay in the Philippines. Volume Two begins the story of Taiwan, which continues in the following two volumes. Volume Five deals with missions in southeast Asia.

臺北利氏很榮幸出版《China Jesuits in East Asia 1948-1968中國耶穌會士在東亞1948-1968》六冊套書，為二戰發生後二十年的遠東耶穌會歷史做出重大貢獻。書中明確記載了非常詳細的資訊，說明1949年中共政權接管後，勒令眾多外國及本國耶穌會士與學者離開中國，被驅逐的他們在當時被認為是自由中國的台灣，及菲律賓、馬來西亞—新加坡、泰國和越南，如何設立耶穌會院及各式各樣創新工作的描述。

本套書是沈起元神父（Fernando Mateos SJ, 1920-2015）付出無數耐心的成果展現。他在上世紀的後幾十年中，收集及整理數量龐大的書面文件及口述訪談，沈神父最初只在1995年出版了第一卷Starting from Zero 1949-1957，全書未附索引，英文也並不流暢。

後續接手的編者雷敦龢神父（Edmund Ryden SJ）也貢獻良多，他不僅以母語進行全面的修訂，還將原始章節重新編輯成為六冊的套書，把關於一個特定領域、時期或特定的使徒工作範疇分別歸類於每冊中，讓讀者在參考和閱讀變得更容易。

如此，第一冊包含了耶穌會士離開中國大陸、暫時停留於香港及澳門（以及開展後來的傳教工作），還有菲律賓的歷史。第二至四冊涵蓋台灣的故事。第五冊講述在東南亞的傳教活動。

“Researchers in the history of Chinese Christianity during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries are familiar with the directory of the Jesuits in China from 1552 to 1800 compiled by Fr. Joseph Dehergne, SJ. The book was published in French in 1973 in the prestigious Bibliotheca Instituti Historici Societatis Jesu. However, until now no similar directory exists for the second great period of the mission of the Jesuits in China that can easily be situated between years 1842 and 1955: 1842 when the three first Jesuit missionaries arrived in China after the restoration of the Society of Jesus, and 1955 when foreign missionaries had already been expelled from mainland China by the communist government, and most of the outstanding native Jesuits were imprisoned.

The publication of the present directory of the Jesuits in China between 1842 and 1955, aims to remedy this omission. It is the result of collaboration between three Jesuits from the Chinese Province of the Society of Jesus: Fernando Mateos (✝), Edmund Ryden and Olivier Lardinois. Beside the biographical notices of 1,570 Jesuits who worked in China between 1842 and 1955, this directory includes various annexes so that it can be more easily consulted and from different points of entry: an index of names in the forms transliteration each used, another index according to international Pinyin and Chinese characters, Jesuit missions statistics, a chronology of the history of the mission and various mission areas, status in Church leadership (Bishops, Prefects Apostolic) and in academic and scientific work, a list of official and non-official Jesuit martyrs, a few maps and photos, and a selective bibliography.”—BACK COVER.

由費賴之神父(Joseph Dehergne, SJ)撰寫、並在1973年於著名的Bibliotheca Instituti Historici Societatis Jesu所出版的《明清間在華耶穌會士列傳》，內容收錄了1552年至1800年止的會士名錄及簡歷，對於研究16~18世紀中國天主教歷史的學者來說，是非常熟悉的一本書。然而在1842年至1955年，這個耶穌會在中國的另一段重要時期，卻沒有相關的名錄存在。重新恢復的耶穌會，所派遣的第一批三位會士於1842年重返中國土地；1955年，多數外籍傳教士被中國共產黨政府驅逐出境、而大部分傑出的中國籍會士則多被監禁。
