Church, state, and history : the last Jesuit higher education institute in China / Jiang Youguo 姜有國 and Tian Weishuai

"This book explores the history of the Tianjin Institute of Higher Studies in Industry and Commerce, the last Jesuit higher education institution in China. Founded by French Jesuit missionaries in 1921, the institute played a crucial role in the educational and cultural exchange between China and France during a transformative period. The authors detail the institute's foundation, development under various political regimes, and its integration into the Chinese national education system after 1949, highlighting its influence on Chinese modernization and the unique cross-cultural collaboration it fostered. Through meticulous research, Youguo Jiang, S.J., and Weishuai Tian provide an insightful narrative of the institute's challenges and achievements. The book examines the broader context of Catholic and Protestant missionary activities in China, offering a comprehensive look at the interplay between religion, education, and politics. This work is essential for scholars of Chinese history, religious studies, and educational development, as well as those interested in the legacy of Jesuit education in China."
