The book is the proceedings of a symposium examining the “four youths from Zipangu (Japan)” who were sent to Europe in the late 16th century as part of the Tenshō mission. The mission itself involved four young Japanese Christians — 伊東マンショ (Itō Manshō), 千々石ミゲル (Chijiwa Miguel), 中浦ジュリアン (Nakaura Julian), and 原マルチノ (Hara Martinō) — who travelled from Japan via Macau and India to Europe, met with the Pope and European monarchs, and returned to Japan around 1590.
