" ....Calepino's Latin grammar was a handy reference book which the Jesuits employed in learning or teaching Latin in their educational institutes. Using this grammar as its basis, but omitting personal and place names and words seldom used in everyday life, and retaining the meaning of the words and idioms, the compilers added to each Latin word the corresponding Portuguese and Japanese words.....total number of words exceeds 32,000....some are more ancient words of the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, but mostly more recent words of the Civil War and early Yedo period....inclusion of large number of words with the "Go" (Wu, or South China) pronounciations is ... striking.
