Original intentions : essays on production, reproduction, and interpretation in the arts of China / edited by Nick Pearce and Jason Steuber.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

A flash in the pan : the "Bushell Bowl" controversy revisited /  Nick Pearce -- Canon formation and the development of western Chinese art history /  Roger Covey -- Pigment style and workshop practice in the Yuan dynasty wall paintings from the Lower Guangsheng Monastery /  Ling-en Lu -- Qing dynasty emperors Kangxi and Qianlong : rule through replication in architecture and the arts /  Jason Steuber -- Replicating the past : ink rubbing and its related ideas in contemporary Chinese art /  Wei-Cheng Lin -- Copying and transmitting, knowledge and nonsense : from the Great encyclopedia to A book from the sky /  Shane McCausland -- Some considerations of the bronze inscription techniques used during the Shang and Zhou dynasties /  Changping Zhang.

Believing that everything has a precedent, Chinese artists were never bashful about reproducing art, typically seeing less of a difference between the original work and reproductions. As a result, replication has often been considered a fundamental mode of production in Chinese art, with roots extending to antiquity. In turn, some collectors would knowingly brandish originals next to replicas while others completely rejected the idea of imitations as artworks. This book explores the controversial questions of faking, copying, and replicating Chinese painting, bronzes, ceramics, works on paper, and sculpture.
