1891년 간행된 최초의 라틴어-한국어 사전, 동서교류문명의 연구의 교량이 되다

『라틴어 옛한글 사전』은 사전학사, 국어사, 동서문명교류사에서 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 이 사전은 조선 후기에 이루어진 서양 언어로 된 다국어 사전 편찬의 흐름 속에 자리하며, 19세기 말 한국어 단어들을 수록하고 있고, 서양 전래 용어가 진작부터 우리 땅에서 번역되고 있었음을 잘 보여주기 때문이다. 동서교류문헌을 연구하는 번역 및 주해자들이 주목하는 것은 서양에서 전래된 용어들이다. 특히 이들 용어는 중국 명·청대 한문 서학서에서 채택된 번역어로, 16세기부터 축적된 서양 도서와 개념 번역의 역사적 과정에서 형성된 것이다. 조선 후기에 유입된 한문 서학서는 다시 한국어로 번역되어 옛한글본이 다수 남아있는데, 조선 후기 동서교류문헌으로 가장 주목받아야 할 이들 자료의 연구에 있어서 이 사전은 필수적으로 참고되어야 할 것이다.

Images include depictions of missionaries and of Tibetan Catholics and their daily lives; geographical scope extends beyond Tibet proper to India's Himalayan states, including Assam, Sikkim, and Arunachal-Pradesh.
