Khaled Anatolios recognized with Luce Fellowship

Khaled Anatolios, professor of historical theology, was recently named a Henry Luce III Fellow in Theology for 2011–2012. The Luce Fellows program recognizes and supports the research of junior and senior scholars whose projects offer significant and innovative contributions to theological studies. Anatolios is one of seven scholars chosen to participate from institutions that include the School of Theology and Ministry, Harvard University Divinity School, the Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara University, and Yale University Divinity School.

The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything–James Martin

James Martin, S.J., author, America magazine culture editor, Huffington Post and New York Times contributor, and a frequent on-air commentator for NPR, CNN, and The Colbert Report, came to campus in March to talk about his best-selling book The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything: A Spirituality for Real Life. Martin gave a lively lecture on Ignatian insights for a contemporary audience, finding God in the real world of work, love, suffering, decisions, prayer, and friendship, and the importance of humor and joy in faith.

Ignatian Colleagues Program

Ignatian Colleagues Program

Boston College participants in the Ignatian Colleagues Program visited the Blessed Peter Faber Community in Brighton, Massachusetts, where they met with Rector Bradley Schaeffer, S.J., Jesuits in formation for the priesthood, and Jesuit priests pursuing further studies at the STM who live in the new community. The Ignatian Colleagues Program is a national program designed to educate and form administrators more deeply in the Jesuit tradition of higher education so that they may better articulate, adapt, and advance Ignatian mission on their campuses. Connell School of Nursing Dean Susan Gennaro, College of Arts and Sciences Dean David Quigley, and Sean Porter, assistant dean of STM, are among eight Boston College administrators currently participating in the program.

More than 70 people attended the first STM Academic Symposium on April 8, 2011. STM Professor Nancy Pineda-Madrid gave the keynote speech at the gathering, which was hosted by the student academic journal Lumen et Vita.

Faculty news

Richard J. Clifford, S.J., lectured on “Prophets and Apostles: Vocation in the Scriptures, Part I” and gave a paper titled “Another Look at Genesis 2-3” at a meeting of Scripture professors from the Boston Theological Institute. Clifford recently returned from a sabbatical semester at the Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara, STM’s sister school, where he worked on a commentary on Genesis.

Christopher Frechette, S.J., urged students to “sing a new song” in creating liturgical and counseling experiences so prisoners can feel safe to be honest with God. Frechette spoke at a presentation and group reflection sponsored by the STM’s Prison Ministry Initiative.

Daniel J. Harrington, S.J., conducted a workshop on Matthew’s Gospel at the Paulist Center in Boston.

Thomas A. Kane, C.S.P., attended the North American Academy of Liturgy Meeting in San Francisco, California and led a workshop on reconciliation ministries at St. Philip Neri in Portland, Oregon. Kane also co-organized the “Healing God’s People” symposium held at Boston College on April 2.

Richard Lennan, who edited the spring issue of C21 Resources, lectured recently to the Northshore-Seacoast Voice of the Faithful on the emergence of the “local church.”

Khaled Anatolios’s article “Signs of Hope for Egyptian Christians” appeared in the March issue of The Living Church. Anatolios also wrote “In the Image: To Pray with an Icon” for the Winter 2011 issue of Boston College Magazine.

Thomas J. Massaro, S.J., delivered the keynote address, “Introduction to Catholic Social Teaching,” at the Archdiocese of Boston’s Social Justice Convocation, and gave a presentation, “Reconciling Our Faith and Political Lives: The 2010 Election,” at St. Edward’s Church in Medfield, Massachusetts.

Christopher R. Matthews reviewed François Bovon’s New Testament and Christian Apocrypha: Collected Studies II in December’s Review of Biblical Literature.

New Theology Review published “Catechesis, Diversity, and Culture: The Importance of (Re) Definitions,” by Hosffman Ospino in its February issue. Ospino also gave two keynote presentations at the Catechetical Conference, Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.

Edward Vacek, S.J., wrote “Conditions May Apply: Relativity without Relativism” for the March 11 issue of Commonweal.
