STM celebrates 10 years

The School of Theology and Ministry (STM) marks its 10th anniversary on June 1, and embarks on a year of celebration and reflection. The School has planned a number of events and lectures to commemorate STM’s first 10 years, including an anniversary Mass and lecture to be given by James Martin, S.J., on September 20.

Commencement 2018

University President William P. Leahy, S.J., and Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory. (Gary Wayne Gilbert)

On May 21, the STM conferred advanced degrees to 125 graduates at the School's diploma ceremony, held on the front lawn at Cadigan Alumni Center. The event followed the University’s 142nd annual Commencement exercises in Alumni Stadium, where Archbishop of Atlanta Wilton D. Gregory, one of five honorary degree recipients, addressed the Class of 2018. The bishop reminded students that words have the power to unite or divide; uplift or discourage.

Student-led conferences and research

Research and reflection are essential to life at STM, encouraging students to integrate what they learn in the classroom with everyday experiences and broad scholarly conversations. STM’s online, open-access, student-run journal Lumen et Vita offers students an opportunity to publish research, reflections, and reviews, and also promotes ongoing dialogue within STM and in the wider academic community. Every year, hundreds of STM students and beyond participate in and lead events such as the Gender, Sexuality, and Catholic Theology Conference (hosted by Gaudete, STM’s LGBTQ+ group) and the Imago Dei conference (hosted by the STM Women’s Group).
