Dear Friends,
I recently had the opportunity to see Waiting for "Superman," a documentary film about the challenges facing America’s urban schools. The film, which has generated substantial debate, implies that traditional district schools are hopelessly paralyzed by self-serving teachers’ unions. It criticizes Catholic schools as being inaccessible to children from low-income backgrounds. The film is, in effect, a manifesto for charter schools.

Faculty news
Professor Robert J. Starratt delivered a keynote presentation at the 15th Annual International UCEA Conference on Values and Leadership in Umea, Sweden, in September. Also in September, Starratt was named the Routledge Education Author of the Month.
Associate Professor Laura O’Dwyer’s Evolution Readiness Project is featured on the National Science Foundation’s website. The project introduces the concepts of evolution and descent to fourth and fifth graders through the use of computer-based and offline activities. Boston College and Concord Consortium collaborated on the project.

Alumni notes Lynch School alumni are working in dynamic careers around the country. Below is a sampling of our graduates’ recent achievements.
Undergraduate alumni are teaching in K–12 schools across the nation. Alexandra Tomkins ’09 teaches autistic children in New Jersey. Kaitlyn Burke ’08, MA ’09 also teaches in New Jersey. Jennifer Winslow ’08, MA ’10 and Caitlin Librizzi ’10 both teach in Harlem. And Dianne Bacsik ’10 is teaching in Milton.
