Five faculty, alumni receive AERA awards

AERA is the largest and most prominent interdisciplinary research association devoted to the scientific study of education and learning.

College Bound youth have a voice in social justice issues

A daylong youth symposium focused on helping students become change agents in their schools and communities marked the 30th anniversary of College Bound, the Boston College-based pre-college enrichment and support program for Boston public high school students.

New Campus School director named

Barbara J. Cataldo, a former superintendent of public schools in Cohasset, Mass., and a veteran public school administrator, was named director of the Campus School at Boston College. Housed in the Lynch School’s Campion Hall, the publicly funded school enrolls more than 40 students aged 3-21 with multiple disabilities, providing personalized special education for students whose complex physical and developmental challenges may affect their communication and learning capabilities.

Educating young people to become whole human beings

As we welcomed family, friends, and mentors to celebrate the Lynch School’s more than 500 graduating students at last month’s Commencement, I encouraged our newest alumni to remember not just the knowledge they gained and the friendships they formed but the Lynch School’s overarching goal: to guide young people to become whole human beings who live purposeful lives.

Faculty news

Augustus Long Professor Janet Helms received the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award in Mentoring from the American Psychological Association’s Society of Counseling Psychology, Division 17. Helms, who is director of the Institute for the Study and Promotion of Race and Culture, also presented the keynote address at the Youth Empowerment and Career Development for Graduate and Undergraduate Students in Nigeria symposium at the University of Nigeria in January.

Alumni notes

Natalee Deaette ’19 received a 2018 Truman Scholarship, which is awarded on the basis of leadership potential, intellectual ability, and a strong record of public service leadership.

 

Jessica Barnes ’18, Audrey Mary DeLorenzo ’18, and Talia Mango, M.Ed. ’18, received Fulbright Scholarships for study abroad in Montenegro, Spain, and Italy, respectively.
