Sixty-five years ago, the Lynch School opened its doors to teach and train educators and counselors and influence the youth they serve. We have since become a world-class school—attracting students and faculty from around the world and helping guide their work to inform research and practice in education and applied psychology.

International partnership fosters collaboration

Boston College Provost David Quigley and Itzcóatl Tonatiuh Bravo Padilla, rector general of the University of Guadalajara, at the memorandum signing

Boston College and the University of Guadalajara (UdeG) signed a memorandum of understanding that established a collaborative exchange between the Lynch School’s Center for International Higher Education and the Mexican university’s Office for Cooperation and International Affairs. The two institutions outlined plans that include the development of training programs and seminars on internationalization in higher education; student and faculty exchanges; and joint academic degree programs, publications, and activities.

New faculty join Lynch

The Lynch School this year welcomes three new assistant professors: Andrés Castro Samayoa, who studies big data and diversity in postsecondary education; Gabrielle Oliveira, who explores the effects of immigration on education; and Jon Wargo, who investigates the intersection of literacy, technology, and cultural studies.

Faculty news

The Institute of Education Sciences awarded a four-year, $2.5 million evaluation grant to City Connects, the Lynch School’s student support intervention program. The three-part study will analyze student performance in 41 schools in urban districts in Massachusetts and Connecticut, encompassing more than 20,000 K-8 students.

A three-year, $2 million continuation grant from the National Science Foundation will support a Lynch School initiative to engage Massachusetts urban public school students in the science and enterprise of hydroponic gardening. More than 800 middle and high school students will learn how to grow produce without soil and sell it at local farmers’ markets.

Alumni notes

Lauren Sanchez Gilbert, Ed.D. ’12 (Educational Leadership), was appointed chief executive officer of Building Educators for Life, a Massachusetts-based nonprofit.

Evan Schinell, M.A. ’10 (Mental Health Counseling), is president-elect of the Massachusetts Mental Health Counselors Association.
